Houzer MGS-3018-1 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a standard garbage disposal fit the Houzer Medallion MGS-3018?
The drain opening is 3-1/2 inches, which is the standard kitchen sink size that disposals and standard basket strainers are built for. The drain sits at the rear of the bowl, which keeps the disposal and trap arm toward the back of the cabinet and leaves usable storage under the front.
2) What comes in the box with the Houzer MGS-3018, and what do I still have to buy?
You get the sink, a basket strainer (Houzer 190-9180), mounting clips, a cutting template and installation instructions. Not included: the faucet, the P-trap and tailpiece, and the silicone or epoxy for setting it to the counter. Optional Houzer accessories that fit this bowl are the BG-3600 bottom grid and the CB-2500 and CB-3100 cutting boards.
3) Can I mount the MGS-3018 under a laminate countertop?
No. It is an undermount sink only, with no deck or rim to sit on top of the counter, so it needs a solid surface top (granite, quartz, solid surface) with a finished cutout edge. Laminate tops need a drop-in or a purpose-built laminate undermount system. There is no faucet deck on the sink either, so the faucet holes get drilled in the countertop.
4) Is the MGS-3018 deep enough for large pots and sheet pans?
Bowl depth is a full 9 inches, and the usable bowl measures 29-1/4 by 15-3/4 inches. That takes a half sheet pan flat and stacks tall stock pots. The walls are deep drawn and straight with a moderate radius rather than heavily coved, which is part of why the interior holds that much.
5) Is 18 gauge stainless heavy enough for a rental or commercial kitchenette?
The Medallion Gourmet MGS-3018 is built from 18 gauge T-304 stainless, which is the heavier of the two common residential gauges (20 gauge being the thinner one) and resists denting and flexing better under daily use. T-304 is the chromium-nickel grade that handles food acids and cleaners. It also carries SpecPlus rim edges for added strength and a StoneGuard undercoating over a sound pad to cut noise.
6) Is there a template and instructions for cutting the countertop for the MGS-3018?
Yes, a cutting template and installation instructions ship with the sink, along with the mounting clips. Houzer also publishes a spec sheet for the MGS-3018 and a general undermount installation instruction sheet, both useful for handing dimensions to a fabricator before the top is cut.
7) Is the MGS-3018 a single bowl or split bowl sink?
One bowl, rectangular, 29-1/4 by 15-3/4 inches at 9 inches deep. There is no divider, which is the point of the Medallion Gourmet layout: you can lay a roasting pan or a cookie sheet flat. If you want to separate washing and rinsing, add the BG-3600 bottom grid or a CB-2500 or CB-3100 cutting board over the rim rather than looking for a divided version.
8) What is the exact model number to order this Houzer sink with the strainer?
Order MGS-3018-1. The base model is MGS-3018 in the Medallion Gourmet collection, and the -1 suffix is the configuration supplied with the basket strainer, in satin stainless. UPC 881208012107.
9) Does the finish on this sink show water spots and scratches?
The Medallion Gourmet MGS-3018 has a lustrous satin finish with a highlighted rim. A brushed satin surface hides light scratching and daily wear far better than a mirror polish, and the finish resists water, food and chemical corrosion without fading. Houzer publishes care and maintenance guidance for keeping it up.
