1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon RCCS22X butt splice take?
The RCCS22X is sized for 12-10 AWG wire, and the yellow insulation is the standard color code for that range. Both ends take the same gauge, so it joins 12 to 12, 10 to 10, or 12 to 10. For 16-14 AWG you need a blue-coded splice, and for 22-16 a red one.

It's a heat shrinkable butt splice, so the insulation shrinks down over the conductors when you apply heat and forms the seal itself. No tape or separate sleeve needed. For anything exposed to weather, washdown or condensation, the heat shrink type is the one to use. The RCCS22X seals as the sleeve shrinks over the wire insulation, where a plain nylon or vinyl splice leaves the conductor entry open to moisture wicking. For dry interior raceway work the cheaper non-shrink splice is adequate.
