Ideal Industries 46-343 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire sizes does the IDEAL Thermo-Shrink TS-46 heavy-wall heat shrink fit?
The TS-46 heavy-wall tubing covers splices on 12 through 6 AWG conductors. With a 3:1 shrink ratio it recovers down tight over the smaller gauges in that range as well as the larger ones, so one size handles the whole 12-6 AWG band.
2) Can IDEAL TS-46 heat shrink be used on a direct-buried or submerged splice?
Yes. The adhesive liner seals the splice for above-grade, underground, and underwater use, so it is suitable for direct burial and wet locations as well as dry above-grade work. The liner melts and flows during shrinking to fill voids around the connector.
3) What voltage and temperature is IDEAL Thermo-Shrink TS-46 tubing rated for?
Rated 600V and 90 degrees C for continuous operation. That covers secondary distribution, feeder, and branch circuit splices at standard building voltages, including conductors with 90 C insulation ratings.
4) How many pieces come in a pack of IDEAL 46-343 heat shrink?
Each pack holds 100 pieces of one length. That is a stocking quantity for a service truck or an MRO crib rather than a single-splice purchase, so crews doing repeat underground or switchgear splice work get one box per length they standardize on.
5) Is this heavy-wall heat shrink flame retardant enough for cable tray and switchgear work?
The TS-46 is built for maximum flame retardancy and passes the IEEE 383 vertical flame test, and it meets ANSI C37.20.2, the standard referenced for metal-clad switchgear. That combination is what gets heat shrink accepted on tray, riser, and gear splices where a non-rated sleeve would be rejected.
6) What is the difference between heavy-wall adhesive-lined heat shrink and ordinary thin-wall tubing?
Heavy-wall tubing like the TS-46 is irradiated cross-linked polyolefin with an internal adhesive liner, so it both insulates and seals against moisture; thin-wall tubing with no liner only insulates and will not keep water out of a buried or submerged splice. If the splice is underground, in a handhole, or ever submerged, the adhesive-lined heavy-wall version is the one to use. For dry indoor strain relief and color coding, plain thin-wall is enough.
