Thin wall is for wire marking, strain relief, and dry-location insulation; it won't seal a buried or submerged splice.
5) Can 3M FP-301 heat shrink tubing be used in place of IDEAL Thermo-Shrink 46-351 for a direct-buried cable splice?
No. The IDEAL Thermo-Shrink TS-46 heavy-wall tubing is an irradiated cross-linked polyolefin with an adhesive liner that insulates and protects electrical splices in above-grade, underground or underwater applications, and it is rated 600V, 90 C continuous. The 3M FP-301 is a single wall, thin wall flexible polyolefin tubing with no adhesive liner, so it is not the equivalent for a sealed buried or submerged splice. Use the heavy-wall adhesive-lined IDEAL part for that opening.
6) Does the 3M FP301-2 black tubing carry the same flame and utility approvals as IDEAL Thermo-Shrink TS-46?
The IDEAL Thermo-Shrink TS-46 heavy-wall tubing is built to maximum flame retardancy and meets UL 486D, CSA C22.2 No. 198.2, ANSI C119.1, Western Underground Guides 2.4 and 2.5, MIL-DTL-23053/15, the IEEE 383 vertical flame test, ANSI C37.20.2, ICEA S-19-8 and NEMA insulation thickness requirements. Those are thin wall single wall products, so they do not replace the adhesive-lined heavy-wall sleeve on a sealed splice.
