Sta-Kon RC486 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon RC486 ring terminal crimp onto?
The RC486 is sized for 12-10 AWG stranded copper conductor. Yellow insulation is the standard color code for that range, so you can confirm the gauge at a glance on an inspection walk. For 16-14 AWG you need a blue-barrel terminal and for 22-16 AWG a red one; crimping a 14 AWG wire into this barrel will not hold.
2) What screw or stud size does the RC486 rectangular ring tongue fit?
The tongue is drilled for a No. 4 screw or stud. That is a small terminal-block or control-panel screw, so check the stud on your breaker lug or bus bar before ordering, a 1/4-20 stud will not pass through it.
3) Is this Sta-Kon terminal rated for 600 volt control and power circuits?
Yes, the RC486 carries a 600 V rating, which covers typical 120/208, 240, and 480 V commercial panel and motor-control work as well as low-voltage control wiring. It is also UL recognized under file E9809.
4) Why pick a rectangular ring terminal over a spade or fork terminal?
A rectangular ring tongue is a closed barrel ring, so the connection cannot vibrate off the screw the way a fork or spade can back out. On motor starters, rooftop HVAC units, and anything subject to vibration, specify the ring. The fork type is the one to use when you need to drop a wire onto a captive screw without fully removing it for service.
5) Do I need a special crimp tool for these nylon insulated terminals?
Use an insulated-terminal crimper with the yellow die nest, matched to the 12-10 AWG barrel. The crimp tool is not included with the terminals, so order it separately if your truck does not already carry one. A plier-style uninsulated crimper will crush the nylon sleeve and give you an unreliable joint.
6) Can I use the RC486 on aluminum conductor?
No. It is a copper barrel terminal and should be used on copper conductor only, 12-10 AWG. Aluminum requires a terminal specifically listed AL9CU or CU/AL along with the correct inhibitor compound.
7) Is the insulation on the RC486 nylon or vinyl, and does that matter?
Nylon, not vinyl. Nylon sleeves take more abrasion and hold up better at elevated panel temperatures and against oils, which is why panel shops and MRO crews standardize on nylon-insulated terminals for enclosure work. The barrel itself is copper.
8) Is the Sta-Kon RC486 made in the USA for government and institutional spec work?
Country of origin on the RC486 is the United States, which matters on federal, military, and some state and municipal jobs with domestic-content requirements. The UL recognition file is E9809.
