Sta-Kon RA713M – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon RA713M ring terminal accept?
The RA713M takes 22 to 16 AWG stranded copper conductor, which is the red insulation color code on nylon-insulated terminals. If you are landing 14 or 12 AWG, this is the wrong barrel size and you need a blue (16-14) or yellow (12-10) terminal instead.
2) Is the Sta-Kon RA713M UL recognized?
Yes, it carries UL file E9809. That matters for inspected work in commercial panels, controls and equipment where the terminations have to be a listed component.
3) Should I use a ring terminal or a fork/spade terminal on a terminal block?
A ring terminal like the RA713M has to come off the stud to be removed, which is why it is specified where vibration or an accidental pull-off is a concern: panel grounds, motor leads, battery and busbar connections. A fork or spade slides out sideways under a loosened screw, so it is faster for service work on crowded terminal strips but it can back out. For anything safety or ground related, the ring is the one to use.
4) What crimp tool do I need for the RA713M, and can I use a cheap stamped crimper?
It is a non-insulated-free, nylon insulated barrel in the 22-16 AWG range, so it crimps with the red die nest of any insulated-terminal crimper. A stamped plier-type crimper will mechanically hold the wire, but for UL-compliant work the terminal should be crimped with the tool and die matched to the insulated 22-16 range so the barrel is fully compressed without splitting the nylon. Strip length should leave the conductor flush with the end of the barrel, no bare copper showing past the insulation sleeve.
5) What is the difference between a nylon insulated ring terminal and a vinyl one?
The RA713M uses nylon insulation over the copper barrel. Nylon resists abrasion, cut-through and higher operating temperatures better than vinyl, and it stays flexible rather than cracking, so it is the usual pick for machinery, automotive and control panel harnesses that get handled. Vinyl is the lower-cost choice for static indoor wiring.
6) Are these Sta-Kon ring terminals made in the USA?
Country of origin on the RA713M is the United States. If your contract or government spec calls for domestic terminations, that is the data point your procurement file needs.
7) Can I use this ring terminal on solid copper wire?
Barrel crimp terminals in the 22-16 AWG range, including the RA713M, are intended for stranded conductor. A crimp on solid wire does not cold-flow the same way and can loosen under vibration. For solid wire, land it directly under a screw terminal or use a connector rated for solid conductor.
