Sta-Kon 18RA-38 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon 18RA-38 ring terminal crimp onto?
The 18RA-38 is sized for 22 to 16 AWG stranded copper wire. The red vinyl insulation is the standard color code for that gauge band, so if you are terminating 14 or 12 AWG you need the blue or yellow equivalent instead, not this one.
2) Can I use the Sta-Kon 18RA-38 on a 480 volt motor control circuit?
It carries a 600 V rating, so 480 V control and power wiring is within range. It is UL recognized under file E9809.
3) Is the barrel on this Sta-Kon terminal copper or aluminum?
Copper. That makes the 18RA-38 correct for copper conductors only; aluminum wire needs an AL/CU rated connector with the proper inhibitor compound.
4) Why choose a ring terminal instead of a fork or spade for panel terminations?
A ring tongue like the 18RA-38 is a closed barrel, so the connection cannot slip off the stud if the nut backs off. Fork terminals install faster because you can slide them under a loosened screw, but they can work free under vibration. For motor terminals, grounding bolts, and anything in a vibrating enclosure, the ring is the one to spec.
5) Does the vinyl insulation on the 18RA-38 provide strain relief, or do I need heat shrink?
The vinyl sleeve on this terminal insulates the barrel and color codes the gauge, but it is not an adhesive-lined heat shrink. For wet locations or outdoor pull boxes where moisture at the crimp is a concern, a heat shrink insulated ring terminal is the better choice.
6) Are Sta-Kon ring terminals made in the USA for government and institutional orders?
The 18RA-38 is manufactured in the United States, which matters for domestic-preference procurement on federal, school district, and institutional projects.
