Sta-Kon RDV727 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon RDV727 ring terminal take?
The RDV727 is built for 8 AWG conductor, and the red vinyl insulation is the color code tied to that size on this part. If you are terminating 10 or 12 AWG, step down to the smaller barrel size instead of crimping an 8 AWG barrel onto thinner wire, since the crimp will not hold.
2) Can I use this ring terminal on a 480V motor connection?
The RDV727 carries a 600 V rating, so it covers 120, 240, and 480 V power circuits as well as control wiring. It is UL recognized under file E9809.
3) Why use a ring terminal instead of a fork or spade terminal on a panel stud?
A ring tongue is a closed barrel, so it cannot vibrate off the stud if the nut backs off. That is why ring terminals like the RDV727 are specified for motor leads, battery and ground connections, and anything subject to vibration. Fork and spade tongues install faster because they slide in under a loosened nut, but they can pull out, which is why panel work under inspection usually calls for rings.
4) Is the Sta-Kon RDV727 barrel copper or aluminum?
Copper. That means it is intended for copper conductor, not aluminum. For aluminum feeders you need a terminal marked AL or AL9CU with the right inhibitor compound, not a plain copper barrel.
5) Do I need a special crimp tool for an 8 AWG insulated ring terminal?
Yes. At 8 AWG the RDV727 is past the range of a common hand-held insulated terminal plier sized for 22 to 10 AWG. Use a crimp tool rated for 8 AWG insulated terminals with the die nest that matches the red color code, and crimp over the barrel, not the ring.
6) Does the vinyl insulation on this terminal cover the wire, or do I still need heat shrink?
The RDV727 has a factory vinyl insulating sleeve over the crimp barrel, so no separate boot or tape is needed over the barrel itself. Vinyl is not a sealing material, though. In wet or outdoor locations use an adhesive-lined heat shrink terminal or seal the connection separately.
