Sta-Kon RB857 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire sizes does the Sta-Kon RB857 ring terminal accept?
The RB857 is sized for 18-14 AWG stranded copper wire. Blue insulation is the standard color code for the 16-14 AWG range, and this terminal carries blue vinyl, so if you are crimping 12-10 AWG (yellow range) or 22-18 only (red), you need a different barrel size. Using it outside 18-14 leaves the conductor loose in the barrel or prevents full insertion.
2) Is this ring terminal rated for 600 volt control and branch circuit wiring?
The Sta-Kon RB857 carries a 600 V rating and is UL recognized under file E9809, so it is suitable for 600 V class control panel, motor control, and branch circuit terminations. That rating covers the vinyl insulation sleeve as well as the crimp barrel.
3) Why use a ring terminal instead of a fork or spade terminal on a terminal block?
A ring tongue, like the one on the RB857, is a closed barrel that cannot vibrate off the stud if the screw backs out. A fork or spade slides off sideways once the screw loosens, which is why inspectors and panel specs often call for ring terminals on grounding and on equipment that vibrates. The tradeoff is that you have to remove the screw completely to install a ring terminal, so spades are faster for service work on dense terminal strips.
4) Is the RB857 terminal copper or aluminum, and can I use it on aluminum building wire?
The barrel is copper, which means it is for copper conductors only. Aluminum wire needs an AL9CU or AL-rated connector with the proper inhibitor compound; crimping aluminum into a copper-only barrel sets up galvanic corrosion at the joint.
5) Do I need a special crimp tool for Sta-Kon insulated ring terminals?
These are insulated vinyl barrel terminals, so they take a crimper with an insulated-terminal nest, color coded to the wire range. Use the blue nest on the tool for the 18-14 AWG barrel. A bare-terminal or open-barrel die will cut or split the vinyl sleeve and leave the crimp out of spec.
6) Is the Sta-Kon RB857 made in the USA for Buy American or government jobs?
Country of origin on the RB857 is the United States, which is what institutional and government procurement typically needs documented for domestic sourcing requirements. The part is ordered by manufacturer part number RB857.
