1) Do I have to order a left-hand or right-hand version of the International Door Closers 850 Series closer?

It does not hold open. The regular arm version is a non-hold-open closer, so the door returns and latches every time. If you need the leaf to stand open, the 850 Series is also built with hold-open arms, adjustable to hold anywhere from 90 to 180 degrees, and with a fusible link hold-open arm for openings where the hold has to release under heat.
5) I need back-check to stop the door slamming into a wall. Does the 852/853/855 have it?
No. The 852, 853 and 855 are the standard models with two valves only, closing speed and latching speed. Back-check is a separate range in the same family, the 883, 884 and 885, where a third regulating valve controls back-check and is adjustable after installation. If wind load or a hard-swinging entrance is the problem, order from the back-check models instead of this one.
6) Can I standardize a whole building on the International Door Closers 850 Series and still cover different door widths?
That is the practical case for it. One non-handed body covers left and right swings, mounting is regular, top jamb or parallel arm depending on the frame, and the range spans 36, 42 and 54 inch doors. Finish is Aluminum or Duronodic Bronze, both offered across all three door sizes, so a portfolio can be kept on a single closer family with matching trim.
7) Is the 850 Series closer body cast aluminum or steel, and how does it hold up in an unheated garage or exterior entrance?
