2) What is the difference between the 883/884/885 back-check closers and the 851 through 855 models?
Back-check is the difference. The 851 through 855 are the standard versions without it. Size by door width. The 883-P/884-P is sold for 42 inch and 48 inch doors, the 883 covering the smaller opening and the 884 the larger. Measure the door leaf width at the widest point, not the frame, and take the next size up rather than down when you are between the two.
4) Will an International Door Closers 883-P fit a narrow aluminum storefront door without an adaptor plate?
Usually yes. The 880 Series housing uses a narrow design that mounts on most modern glass and aluminum doors without adaptors, which is why glass front installers reach for it on storefront work. In parallel arm form it mounts to the push side face of the door with the arm bracket on the frame soffit, so it clears the glass stop.
5) Is the International Door Closers 880 Series closer ADA compliant and UL listed?

If you want the door to stand open, order the hold-open arm version rather than this one. On a fire rated opening the fusible link arm is the one that releases the door on heat.
7) Should I mount a door closer parallel arm or regular arm?
Parallel arm puts the closer and the arm on the push side, tucked up against the frame soffit, so nothing projects into the opening. That is the usual choice on corridors, in schools, and anywhere the arm would otherwise be a snag or a vandalism target, and it is what the -P suffix on the 883-P/884-P means.
