1) What does the Isonas advanced security module actually do on an exterior door?
It keeps the lock wiring off the unsecure side of the opening. The module mounts on the secure side and carries the switching for the lock, so an attacker working on the exterior face of the door cannot reach the lock wires and short them to release the door. Communication between the Isonas reader-controller and the module runs on proprietary encrypted serial data rather than raw lock power, which is the reason the wiring on the outside is no longer a soft spot.
2) Do I need a separate power supply for this Isonas security module?
No. The module draws its power from the Isonas reader-controller it connects to, so there is no additional power supply or transformer to specify. It switches up to 3 amps at 12V DC for the lock.
3) Is this module required if I am running a maglock on PoE with an Isonas reader?
Yes. For magnetic lock installations powered over PoE, the Isonas advanced security module is a required part of the setup, not an option. Size your maglock to the 12V DC, 3 amp rating the module carries.
4) Can I use this security module with a non-Isonas reader or access control panel?
No. The module talks to the head end over Isonas proprietary encrypted serial data and takes its power from the Isonas reader-controller, so it only works as part of an Isonas hardwired access control system. It is offered with the Pure IP mullion reader-controller model.
5) Will the Isonas security module hold up mounted outdoors or in an unconditioned space?
The housing is a UV stabilized polycarbonate blend and the internals are potted for weather resistance, so it tolerates exterior and unheated locations better than an open board in a plastic box. It is a commercial-duty part intended for exterior door applications.
6) How much room do I need to fit the Isonas security module above the door or in the frame?
It measures 2-3/4 x 1-1/4 x 3/4 inches, small enough to tuck into a header, a hollow metal frame cavity, or a small junction box on the secure side. Plan the location so the encrypted serial run from the reader-controller and the lock leads both reach it.
7) How are the wires landed on this module, and is there any way to see it is working?
Two sets of terminal blocks handle the connections, so the reader-controller side and the lock side each land on screw terminals with no splicing or soldering. Two LED indicators on the module give you local confirmation during commissioning and troubleshooting.
8) Will a 12V electric strike work with this module, or only maglocks?
Any lock that runs on 12V DC and draws no more than 3 amps can be switched by the module, which covers typical electric strikes and electric latch retraction accessories as well as magnetic locks. The one case where the module is mandatory rather than optional is a maglock powered over PoE.
