Isonas RC-04-PRX-W – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I need a separate access control panel to use the Isonas RC-04 reader-controller?
No panel required. The RC-04 is an all-in-one reader and controller: a single CAT5 run to the door provides both power and data over the existing IT network. The door decision is made at the reader itself, so there is no head-end panel, no panel enclosure, and no home-run to a controller closet.
2) What credentials will the 125 kHz proximity version of the Isonas RC-04 read?
This is the proximity-only build, reading 125 kHz cards and fobs using FSK modulation. If your site uses 13.56 MHz smart credentials (MiFare Classic, Ultralight, Plus, DESFire EV2, iClass CSN, ISO14443A and B) or wants phone credentials over Bluetooth Low Energy, you need the multi-card technology model instead, which covers both 125 kHz and 13.56 MHz.
3) Can I power the Isonas RC-04 reader-controller with PoE, and can it also power the lock?
Yes on both counts. It accepts Power over Ethernet to IEEE 802.3af, Class 0, or 12VDC in with a 9 to 16V working range. Do not feed it 24VDC, that is not approved for this device. The controller supplies 600mA of conditioned lock power on its output, which covers a typical strike or small maglock but not a heavy-draw lock.
4) Can the Isonas reader-controller be mounted outdoors?
Yes. It is conformal coated for weather resistance, carries an IP56 exposure rating, and operates from -40F to 135F (-40C to 57C), so an exterior entry or an unconditioned garage door is within range. The metal back plate gives a two-piece install and keeps read range consistent once mounted.
5) What are the wall mount dimensions of the Isonas RC-04, and will it fit on a door mullion?
The wall mount housing measures 5.1 x 3.25 x 0.75 inches, so it needs a flat wall or frame face wider than a typical aluminum stile. For a narrow glass-front mullion, order the mullion form factor instead, which measures 5.1 x 1.7 x 0.75 inches. A wall mount keypad version shares the 5.1 x 3.25 x 0.75 inch footprint.
6) Does the Isonas RC-04 still let people in if the network goes down?
Yes. Local mode lets the reader-controller keep making access decisions without a network connection, which also cuts response time and network traffic day to day. Onboard it holds 64,000 credentials, 5,000 events, and 32 time schedules, so a small to mid-size tenant population fits comfortably at the door.
7) What access control software works with the Isonas Pure IP reader-controller?
It runs on Pure Access cloud or Pure Access Manager on-premise, and it is also supported by Open Options and Genetec. Communication is standard Ethernet TCP/IP over an RJ45 cable at 10Mb, half or full duplex, with DHCP addressing and both network host and client modes. Microcode is field flashable.
8) What inputs and outputs does the 8 wire pigtail on the Isonas RC-04 give me?
The 8 wire pigtail carries lock power out plus two configurable inputs, one for door position sense and one for a general purpose request to exit or auxiliary device. There are also two exterior door kit outputs. Both fail safe and fail secure locks are supported, so you can wire a magnetic lock or an electric strike off the same controller.
9) How does the Isonas reader protect against someone prying it off the wall?
Tamper detection is handled by an onboard accelerometer that senses movement or alteration of the reader and reports it before it becomes a breach. The metal back plate adds physical security on top of that. LEDs on the face give reader status at a glance.
10) How far away does the Isonas proximity reader pick up a card?
Typical read range is about 3 inches on RFID cards, with proximity read speed under 250 milliseconds. That is a present-the-card range, not a hands-free one, so mount it where a user can reach it comfortably from the approach side of the door.
