Isonas R-1-MCT-WK – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Isonas Pure IP Wiegand keypad reader be used with a third-party access control panel, or does it only work with Isonas?
It's a standard Wiegand reader, so it wires to any panel that takes Wiegand. The 8 wire pigtail carries Wiegand data 0 (green), data 1 (white), power (red, 5-16V DC), ground (black), shield drain, plus separate control lines for the green LED (blue), red LED (orange), and beeper (yellow), and a tamper output on brown. On the Isonas side it works with Pure Access and can be run off a PowerNet IP-Bridge or a Pure IP reader-controller.
2) What credentials will the Isonas MCT keypad reader read? We have a mix of old 125 kHz prox and newer smart cards.
Both, on the same reader. It's multi-technology: 125 kHz (FSK modulation) and 13.56 MHz, covering MiFare Classic, Ultralight and MiFare Plus, MiFare DESFire EV2 (secure data, Isonas credentials only), iClass CSN, and ISO 14443A, ISO 14443B and ISO 15693. Bluetooth Low Energy 4.1 and later is supported too, so a phone running the Isonas pure mobile app works as a credential. That makes it a reasonable choice for a site midway through a credential migration, since you don't have to reissue cards to swap the reader.
3) Will the Isonas wall mount keypad reader fit a single gang box?
Yes, it's a single gang wall mount form factor and measures 5.1 x 3.25 x 0.71 inches. Installation is two pieces: a metal back plate goes on first, then the reader body. Isonas also builds the same reader as a mullion version at 5.1 x 1.7 x 0.71 inches, which is what you want on a narrow aluminum stile where 3.25 inches won't sit flat.
4) Can this Isonas keypad reader be mounted outside on an exterior door?
Rated IP55 with an operating range of -40F to 158F (-40C to 70C), so exterior door use is within spec, including unheated garages, loading docks and cold storage entries. IP55 is dust protected and resistant to low pressure water jets, not submersion, so mount it on a wall or mullion rather than anywhere it would sit in standing water.
5) How much power does the Isonas wall mount keypad reader draw, and how many can I run off one supply?
The wall mount keypad version pulls 143mA average and 193mA peak on 5-16V DC. Size the supply on the peak figure across every reader that could be presented at once. For reference on a mixed job, the mullion reader draws 106mA average and 144mA peak, and the non-keypad wall mount draws 119mA average and 169mA peak. The wide 5-16V DC input means it runs off either a 12V access control supply or a 5V source without a separate regulator.
6) Do I need the keypad version, or is a card-only reader enough?
The 12 key backlit keypad is what you add when you want PIN or card-plus-PIN at the opening: a code for contractors and vendors who never get a card, or two factor on a server room, pharmacy or cash office. If every user at that door carries a card or phone, the plain wall mount or mullion reader does the same reading job in a smaller package and draws less current. The keypad models cost you nothing in credential support, they read the same 125 kHz and 13.56 MHz technologies.
7) How does the tamper output on the Isonas Pure IP reader work and what do I wire it to?
Tamper detection is by accelerometer, so it senses the unit being moved or pried rather than needing a plunger switch behind the plate. It reports on the brown conductor of the pigtail as an output, which you land on a supervised input at the panel to get the alarm into your system. Leave it unconnected and the reader still senses tamper, but nothing downstream hears about it.
8) What read range should I expect from the Isonas MCT reader, and can I mount it on a metal frame?
About 3 inches typical on RFID cards, with proximity read speed under 250 msec. The metal back plate is part of the design and gives a consistent read range, so the usual detuning you get mounting a prox reader straight to steel or aluminum is accounted for. At 3 inches, users need to present the card to the reader, not wave it past from a foot away, worth telling tenants before a fleet rollout.
9) Can I mix Isonas mullion and wall mount readers across a building and keep them looking the same?
That's the intent of the Pure IP line. Mullion, wall mount, and wall mount keypad share the same family styling and the same 5.1 inch height and 0.71 inch depth, so a glass front entry on a mullion reader and an interior single gang opening on a wall mount read as one system. All three are available in multi-card technology, so one credential works everywhere. The form factors cover both US and EU mounting patterns.
10) What feedback does the user get at the door, and can the panel control it?
A tristate LED light bar (red, green, amber) plus a buzzer, and the keypad is backlit for use in the dark. The panel drives all three: blue is the green LED control line, orange is the red LED line, and yellow is the beeper line, all inputs to the reader. So your controller decides what a valid read, a denied read, or a door held open looks and sounds like at the reader.
11) Is the Isonas Pure IP keypad reader rated for commercial buildings, and what is it made of?
It's a commercial grade access control reader, built from ABS plastic with an SECC metal back plate, and made in the USA. It carries FCC, IC and CE certification, which covers US, Canadian and European installs off the same part.
