Isonas RC-04-MCT-WK – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Isonas RC-04 reader-controller need a separate access control panel?
No panel required. The RC-04 is an all-in-one intelligent reader-controller: the decision-making, credential database and door outputs all live in the unit at the door. A single CAT5 run carries both power and data, so you connect it to the existing IT network instead of home-running everything back to a panel enclosure. Each unit holds 64,000 credentials, 5,000 events and 32 time schedules on board, and local mode keeps the door working if the network connection drops.
2) What credentials will the Isonas MCT reader read?
The MCT version is the multi-card model, reading both 125 kHz (FSK modulation) and 13.56 MHz. That covers MiFare Classic, Ultralight and MiFare Plus, MiFare DESFire EV2 (secure data, Isonas credentials only), iClass by CSN, and ISO14443A and B. Bluetooth Low Energy 4.1 and later is supported for phone credentials through the Isonas pure mobile app, and the 12-key backlit keypad adds PIN entry. If you only run 125 kHz prox cards, Isonas also builds a proximity-only version.
3) Can I power the Isonas RC-04 over PoE, and will it also power my lock?
PoE works, IEEE 802.3af Class 0, which is the normal way these get installed. You can alternatively feed it 12VDC in, with a 9 to 16V input window. 24VDC is not approved for this device and will not be covered. The unit provides 600mA of conditioned lock power out of its 8-wire pigtail, so a strike or maglock drawing within that can run straight off the reader-controller. Both fail safe and fail secure locks are supported.
4) Will the Isonas wall mount keypad reader fit a single gang box?
Yes, the wall mount keypad form factor is single gang and measures 5.1 x 3.25 x 0.75 inches. The mullion version is the narrow one at 5.1 x 1.7 x 0.75 inches if you are mounting on an aluminum storefront stile instead. Both mount as a two-piece assembly on a metal back plate, which also keeps read range consistent. The kit includes a 7.5 inch extension cable and a 19mm diameter adapter.
5) What do I still need to wire at the door besides the Isonas RC-04?
The 8-wire pigtail gives you the lock output with 600mA of conditioned power, two configurable inputs and two exterior door kit outputs. Those two inputs take a door position switch for door sense and a general purpose request-to-exit or auxiliary device. So plan on a strike or maglock, a door contact, and a REX (motion sensor or exit device switch) as separate items. Network side is a standard RJ45 Ethernet run, 10Mb half or full duplex, with DHCP addressing supported.
6) What happens to the door if the network goes down?
Local mode keeps the opening working. Because each RC-04 stores its own credential list and schedules (64,000 credentials, 32 time schedules) and makes the access decision at the door, a loss of connection to the host does not lock people out or open the building. Isonas also cites local mode as giving faster user response times, less network traffic and reduced host loading even when the network is healthy.
7) Can this Isonas keypad reader be mounted outdoors on an exterior door?
It is built for exterior use: IP56 exposure rating, conformal coated boards for weather resistance, and an operating range of -40F to 135F (-40C to 57C). That covers unheated vestibules, gates and exposed entries in cold climates. Tamper detection runs off an accelerometer, so any attempt to pry or shift the reader is flagged rather than quietly bypassed.
8) What software runs the Isonas Pure IP reader-controllers?
Four platforms are supported: Pure Access cloud, Pure Access Manager for on-premise hosting, Open Options, and Genetec. So if your facility is already standardized on Genetec or Open Options for video and access, these readers fold into it rather than forcing a second head-end. Microcode is field flashable for updates.
9) Is the Isonas RC-04 UL listed for access control?
It is UL 294 V6 certified and FCC certified, which is the listing specifiers normally call out for access control units on commercial openings. The units are made in the USA, which matters on government and institutional jobs with domestic sourcing language in the spec.
10) How close does a card have to be held to the Isonas reader?
About 3 inches is typical on RFID cards, with proximity read speed under 250 milliseconds. That is a present-the-card range, not a hands-free one, so mount it where a user can reach it from the pull side. The metal back plate behind the unit is part of keeping that read range consistent from door to door.
