Isonas RCK15 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Isonas RCK15 reader-controller need a separate power supply at the door, or will PoE run it?
A single PoE or PoE+ drop runs the whole thing. The RCK15 is an edge device that combines the reader and the door controller in one housing, so there is no separate panel and no need to pull power to the opening. It ships with a 26 AWG Cat 5E pigtail, 8 inches long, for that connection, and it also accepts 10-13VDC if you power it locally instead. Network side is 10/100Mb, half or full duplex, over standard Cat5E or better.
2) Will the Isonas RC reader-controller read the 125 kHz prox cards we already have, and can we move to smart credentials later?
It reads them now and gives you the migration path. The RCK15 carries 125 kHz proximity, 13.56 MHz smart and 2.4 GHz Bluetooth circuitry in one reader and processes multiple formats at the same time, so an existing prox population keeps working while you issue smart cards or mobile credentials to new users. Smart card standards supported are ISO 14443A and ISO 15693, plus CSN and NFC. It is not FIPS 201 compliant, so it is not the reader for a federal PIV opening.
3) Can I mount an Isonas RC keypad reader on a door mullion, or does it need a wall box?
This one is the single gang wall mount version with the 12 key backlit keypad, measuring 5.13 x 3.25 x 1.0 inches (13.0 x 8.3 x 2.5 cm). That footprint is too wide for a narrow aluminum mullion. The RC family is built in three form factors, mullion, wall mount, and wall mount with keypad, so if the credential is going on a storefront mullion you want the mullion version instead of the keypad model.
4) Can this Isonas keypad reader go outside on an exterior door?
Yes. The RCK15 is rated IP65 and operates from -31 to 151 degrees F (-40 to 66 C), and it is listed for interior, exterior, metal and non-metal installation environments. The mounting surface being metal matters for a lot of prox readers, and this one is called out as working on metal.
5) What happens at the door if the network goes down on an Isonas RC reader-controller?
The door keeps working. The RC holds its own decision data on board, up to 64,000 credentials, 5,000 events, 32 time schedules and 32 holidays, and a local mode feature lets it operate with no connection to the network. Because the access decision is made at the reader rather than at a host, response times stay fast and network traffic drops.
6) Is the Isonas RCK15 UL listed for access control, and what other approvals does it carry?
It is UL294 V7 listed and cUL listed. The rest of the approval list is FCC, IC, CE Mark, Red Directive, IP65, REACH, Bluetooth SIG and RoHS 3. That UL294 listing is the one most specifiers and AHJs ask for on an electrified access control opening.
7) What door hardware inputs can I wire to the Isonas RC controller?
Three configurable inputs are on board: door position switch (DPS), request to exit (REX), and an auxiliary input (AUX). That covers the normal single-door package, a door contact for held/forced alarms, and a REX from an exit device or motion sensor. There is also a 2 TTL line clock and data interface for use with the advanced security module (ASM).
8) Will the Isonas RC work with software other than Isonas Pure Access Cloud?
Yes. The RC is built for open PACS solutions and works with Pure Access Cloud as well as other open platforms, and it can be managed in the same system as NDE and LE wireless locks. Commissioning is done through the ENGAGE mobile app, so a tech configures it at the door from a phone rather than at a panel.
9) Should I get the keypad version of the Isonas RC or the card-only reader?
Take the keypad model when you want a PIN as a second factor, PIN-only access for visitors or vendors, or a fallback when someone forgets a credential. The RCK15 is the RC15 reader plus a 12 key backlit keypad in a single gang wall mount body. If the opening only ever uses cards, fobs or mobile, the card-only RC in mullion or wall mount form is the smaller footprint and the simpler install.
10) Can our staff use phones instead of cards on the Isonas RC, and will the credentials match our Schlage readers?
Mobile works over both 2.4 GHz Bluetooth and NFC. On credential parity, the RC is standard with parity to Schlage MTB mobile enabled multi-technology readers and Schlage mobile enabled wireless locks; Isonas credential parity is a factory orderable option, so if your existing population is Isonas you have to specify that when you order rather than change it in the field.
11) How does the Isonas RC reader protect against someone pulling it off the wall or sniffing the line?
Two layers. Tamper detection uses an accelerometer that senses any altering of the reader and flags it before it becomes a breach. On the wire, communication is secured with TLS 1.2 over Ethernet and WebSockets, with DHCP addressing and host or client network modes. Red, amber and green LEDs plus an on/off audible indicator give the user feedback at the door.
