1) Does the Isonas RC11 reader-controller need a separate power supply and access control panel at the door?
No panel, no separate power run. The RC11 is an all-in-one edge reader-controller: it connects to an existing IT network over a single PoE cable, so the controller intelligence and the door power both come down that one Cat5E or better run. It holds 64,000 credentials, 5,000 events, 32 time schedules and 32 holidays on board, and its local mode keeps it making access decisions if the network connection drops. That is the main reason integrators pick this over a reader wired back to a panel board.
2) Can the Isonas RC11 read the 125 kHz prox cards we already issue, and still take phones later?
Both, at the same time. The RC11 carries 125 kHz proximity, 13.56 MHz smart and 2.4 GHz Bluetooth circuitry and processes multiple formats simultaneously, so your existing prox population keeps working while you start issuing smart credentials or mobile. Supported technology is listed as CSN, proximity, Smart, and Mobile over NFC and Bluetooth, to ISO 14443A and ISO 15693. That means you can run a mixed credential base through one reader instead of doing a hard cutover on a set date.
3) Is the Isonas RC11 rated for an exterior door in a cold or hot climate?
It is. The RC11 is IP65 rated and runs from -31 F to 151 F (-40 C to 66 C), and Isonas states it accommodates interior, exterior, metal and non-metal installation environments. That temperature band covers a northern exterior entry and a south-facing sun-loaded storefront. The IP65 rating covers dust and water jets, not submersion, so it is a weather-exposed door reader rather than something to mount where it will sit under standing water.
4) What happens at the door if the network or the access control server goes down on an Isonas RC11?
The door keeps working. The RC11 runs in local mode when it has no connection to the network, deciding access from the credentials and schedules stored on the device: 64,000 credentials, 32 time schedules and 32 holidays, with 5,000 events buffered. Isonas also notes that local operation means faster user response and less load on the host system even when the network is healthy. PoE is still the power source, though, so a switch outage that kills power kills the reader with it. Put the switch on UPS if the opening matters.
5) What door inputs can I wire to an Isonas RC11, and what is the pigtail I have to splice to?
Three configurable inputs: door position switch (DPS), request to exit (REX), and an auxiliary input (AUX). That covers a door contact for held-open and forced-door reporting, a REX device such as a motion sensor or push bar switch on the egress side, and one spare for something like a tamper loop from other equipment. The connection at the reader is a 26 AWG CAT 5E PoE/PoE+ pigtail, 8 inches long, so plan on a junction or box behind the reader to land your field wiring. There are also 2 TTL clock and data lines for use with the advanced security module.
6) Does the Isonas RC11 meet UL 294 for access control, and what else is it certified to?
Certifications on the RC11 are UL 294 V7 and cUL listed, FCC, IC, CE Mark, RED directive, IP65, REACH, Bluetooth SIG and RoHS 3. UL 294 V7 is the current access control unit standard and is what most specifications and AHJs ask for on an electronic access device. One thing to confirm against your spec if you work federal: the RC11 is not FIPS 201 compliant, which rules it out for PIV credential reading on federal projects that require it.
7) Will the same credentials work on Isonas RC readers and Schlage mobile enabled readers and locks?
Credential parity is standard with Schlage MTB mobile enabled multi-technology readers and with Schlage mobile enabled wireless locks, so one credential can cover both the hardwired RC openings and those Schlage devices in a mixed building. Isonas credential parity is the other direction, and that one is a factory orderable option rather than the default, so it has to be specified when the order is placed. If you are standardizing a campus across both families, settle which parity you need before the order goes in, because it is not a field change.
8) Can the Isonas RC11 run on a regular PoE switch, or does it need PoE+ or a local 12VDC supply?
The RC11 accepts PoE+ and also takes 10 to 13 VDC locally, so a standard 12VDC access control supply works if you already have low voltage at the door. The pigtail is a 26 AWG CAT 5E PoE/PoE+ tail, 8 inches long. For a clean single-cable install, feed it from a PoE+ capable switch port or injector. If you are pulling from a shared 12VDC supply, keep the reader inside that 10 to 13 volt window at the device end, not just at the panel, because voltage drop on a long low voltage run is what puts it out of range.
9) Should I use the mullion RC11 or the wall mount reader-controller with a keypad?
Pick by the opening and by whether you need a second factor. The mullion RC11 is the narrow-profile card and mobile reader at 5.94 x 1.77 x 1.0 inches, for aluminum stiles and tight frames where a single-gang plate will not sit flat. The RC Series also comes in wall mount and wall mount with keypad. Go to the keypad version when you want PIN entry or card-plus-PIN on a higher-security door, or when some users will not carry a credential at all. All the RC form factors share the same reader-controller electronics and the same PoE wiring, so the choice is form factor and credential method, not capability.
10) Is the communication on the Isonas RC11 encrypted, and can our IT department put it on the corporate network?
Communication is secured with TLS 1.2, the same encryption standard IT already runs on internal web services, so it will pass most network security reviews. It talks Ethernet and WebSockets over standard Cat5E or better at 10/100 Mb, half or full duplex, and supports DHCP addressing in either network host or client mode. A tamper accelerometer on board senses physical interference with the reader. Practically, IT gives you one PoE switch port and a DHCP lease per door and the reader handles the rest.
11) Do I have to buy Isonas software to run the RC11, or will it work with the access control system we already have?
