Isonas RC15 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Isonas RC15 need a separate door controller panel?
No panel. The RC15 is an all-in-one edge device: the reader and the controller are the same unit, which is the point of the Pure IP architecture. It holds 64,000 credentials, 5,000 events, 32 time schedules and 32 holidays on board, and has three configurable inputs for door position switch, request to exit and auxiliary. That removes the head-end panel and the home-run wiring back to it.
2) Can I mount an Isonas RC15 outside, and what temperature range does it hold up to?
Yes. The RC15 is rated IP65 and works in interior, exterior, metal and non-metal installation environments. Operating range is -31F to 151F (-40C to 66C), which covers most unconditioned exterior openings. The accelerometer-based tamper detection is worth noting on an exterior mount since it senses any physical altering of the reader.
3) What credential types does the Isonas RC15 read? We are still on 125 kHz prox cards.
It reads all of them at once. The RC15 carries 125 kHz proximity, 13.56 MHz smart and 2.4 GHz Bluetooth circuitry and processes multiple formats simultaneously, plus NFC and CSN. That means you can keep issuing your existing 125 kHz prox cards and phase in smart credentials or mobile on your own schedule without swapping readers. Card standards supported are ISO 14443A and ISO 15693.
4) What happens at the door if the network goes down on an Isonas RC15?
Access keeps working. The RC Series runs real-time connectivity with a local mode feature that lets the reader function without a network connection, using the credentials and schedules stored on board. The side benefit even when the network is up is faster user response, less network traffic and lighter load on the host system.
5) Is the Isonas RC15 UL listed for access control, and is the communication encrypted?
The RC15 is UL294 V7 / cUL Listed, and also carries FCC and IC certification, CE Mark, RED directive, Reach, Bluetooth SIG, RoHS 3 and an IP65 rating. Network traffic is secured with TLS 1.2. One thing to flag for federal work: it is not FIPS 201 compliant.
6) Can I mix Isonas RC readers with Schlage NDE and LE wireless locks on one system?
Yes. The RC can be managed in the same system as NDE and LE wireless locks, and it works with open PACS platforms including Isonas Pure Access Cloud. On credentials, the RC has credential parity as standard with Schlage MTB mobile enabled multi-technology readers and Schlage mobile enabled wireless locks; Isonas credential parity is a factory orderable option, so specify it at order time if your existing cards are Isonas.
7) What network settings do I need from IT before installing an Isonas RC15?
Give IT this: the RC15 runs 10/100 Mb Ethernet, half or full duplex, over Cat5E or better, uses WebSockets, and addresses via DHCP. It will operate in network host or client mode. You will also want a PoE or PoE+ switch port since the unit powers off that same run. Commissioning itself is done through the ENGAGE mobile app.
8) Can I add a higher-security interface to the Isonas RC15 for a secure area?
There is a system interface of 2 TTL lines (clock and data) intended for use with the advanced security module (ASM). That is the path when you need reader data handled behind a secure module rather than terminated at the reader itself. The ASM is a separate item and is not part of the reader-controller.
9) How does the Isonas RC15 signal a granted or denied read to the user?
Visually with a red, amber and green LED, and audibly with an indicator that can be switched on or off. On a quiet floor or a residential-adjacent corridor in a multi-family building, turning the audible off and relying on the LED is usually the call.
10) Is the Isonas RC15 suitable for commercial buildings or is it a residential product?
It is a commercial-grade access control device, not a residential one. It is hardwired, UL294 V7 / cUL Listed, and built around IT network infrastructure with PoE and DHCP, which is how commercial offices, healthcare, education and multi-family common areas deploy access control. For a single residential door with no network drop, this is more device than the opening needs.
