Isonas RC-04-PRX-WK – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Isonas RC-04 reader-controller need a separate access control panel?
No panel required. The RC-04 is an all-in-one reader and controller: a single CAT5 run to the device carries both power and data over the existing IT network, so there is no field panel, no panel enclosure and no separate controller board at the door. Decisions are made in the reader itself, which holds 64,000 credentials, 5,000 events and 32 time schedules on board.
2) Will the Isonas RC-04 keep granting access if the network goes down?
Yes. Local mode lets the reader-controller operate without a network connection, using the credentials and schedules stored on the device. Isonas also cites local mode for faster user response, less network traffic and lower host system load even when the network is up.
3) How do you power the Isonas PowerNet IP reader-controller, and can it power the lock too?
Two options: Power over Ethernet (IEEE 802.3af, Class 0), or DC power at 12 VDC in with a usable range of 9 to 16 V. Do not feed it 24 VDC, that is not approved for this device. The unit supplies up to 600mA of conditioned lock power on its output, so a strike or maglock inside that current draw can run off the reader-controller without a separate lock supply. Both fail safe and fail secure locks are supported.
4) Is this the multi-technology Isonas reader or the proximity-only one?
This one is the proximity-only version, reading 125 kHz prox credentials. Isonas builds the reader-controller in two card technology models: proximity-only at 125 kHz, or a multi-card unit covering both 125 kHz and 13.56 MHz. If your site has smart cards at 13.56 MHz, or you are migrating to them, order the multi-technology model instead.
5) Can this Isonas reader-controller be mounted outside?
It is built for exterior use: conformal coated for weather resistance, rated IP56 for exposure, and operating from -40 F to 135 F (-40 C to 57 C). That temperature band covers unheated exterior doors in cold climates. A metal back plate gives a two-piece install and keeps read range consistent.
6) Can staff use a phone instead of a card on the Isonas RC-04?
Yes. Bluetooth Low Energy is built in, and with the Isonas Pure Mobile application a smart phone works as the credential alongside the 125 kHz prox cards. The unit also has a backlit keypad, so PIN entry is available at the door as well.
7) Which mounting style should I pick for an Isonas reader-controller, mullion or single gang wall mount?
Mullion is the narrow body for an aluminum storefront stile or a tight door frame. Single gang wall mount suits a standard electrical box beside the opening and is what you want when you need the keypad version, since the keypad form factor is a wall mount. Isonas offers mullion, wall mount and wall mount keypad form factors, covering both US and EU mounting.
8) What wiring do I need to bring to the door besides the network cable?
The device terminates on an 8 wire pigtail plus a standard RJ45 Ethernet connection. Off that pigtail you get the lock output, two exterior door kit outputs, and two configurable inputs for door position sense and a general purpose Request to Exit or auxiliary contact. Network side is 10Mb, half or full duplex, TCP/IP, with DHCP addressing and host or client modes supported, and the microcode is field flashable.
9) Is there any protection if someone tries to pry the reader off the wall?
Tamper detection is built in through an accelerometer, which senses the unit being altered or moved and flags it before it becomes a breach. The metal back plate behind the reader adds physical security to that.
