Isonas RC-04-MCT-W – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Isonas RC-04 reader-controller need a separate access control panel?
No panel required. The RC-04 is an all-in-one reader and controller: a single CAT5 run carries both power and data, and the door decision is made at the reader itself. That is the whole point of the Pure IP design - you use the existing IT network instead of running home runs back to a panel closet. It talks Ethernet TCP/IP over a standard RJ45 cable, supports DHCP addressing, and runs in either network host or client mode.
2) How do I power the Isonas PowerNet reader-controller, and can I run it on 24VDC?
Two options: Power over Ethernet (IEEE 802.3af, Class 0) or 12VDC in, with an acceptable range of 9 to 16V. Do not feed it 24VDC - that is specifically not approved for this device, so if your existing door power supply is a 24V unit you need a 12V supply or a PoE switch/injector instead.
3) Can the Isonas RC-04 power the electric lock directly, or do I need a separate lock power supply?
It provides conditioned lock power at 600mA through an 8 wire pigtail, so a strike or maglock drawing under 600mA can run straight off the reader-controller. Both fail safe and fail secure wiring are supported. If your lock pulls more than 600mA inrush or holding, plan on a separate supply and relay.
4) Which credentials will the 13.56MHz Isonas reader-controller read?
The multi-technology RC-04 reads both 125 kHz (FSK modulation) and 13.56MHz credentials, plus Bluetooth Low Energy phone credentials (BLE 4.1 and later) through the Isonas mobile app. On the 13.56MHz side that covers MiFare Classic, Ultralight and MiFare Plus, MiFare DESFire EV2 secure data (Isonas credentials only), iClass read by CSN, and ISO14443A and B. Typical read range is about 3 inches on RFID cards with proximity read under 250msec. There is also a proximity-only model that reads 125 kHz alone, so specify the multi-card version if you have a mixed card population.
5) What happens to the Isonas reader if the network goes down?
It keeps working. Local mode lets the reader-controller make access decisions on its own without a connection to the host, which also cuts response time and network traffic in normal operation. Onboard capacity is 64,000 credentials, 5,000 events and 32 time schedules, so a door can stay live and keep logging through an outage.
6) Will the Isonas mullion reader-controller fit on a narrow aluminum storefront mullion?
The mullion form factor measures 5.1 x 1.7 x 0.75 inches, which is the size intended for narrow vertical mullion mounting on glass front and storefront openings. If you are mounting to a single gang box or a wall instead, the wall mount and wall mount keypad versions are 5.1 x 3.25 x 0.75 inches. Both US and EU mounting patterns are covered across the form factors.
7) Can the Isonas RC-04 be mounted outdoors on an exterior door?
Yes. The board is conformal coated for weather resistance, rated IP56 for exposure, and the operating range is -40F to 135F (-40C to 57C), so it holds up in exterior and unconditioned locations. Two exterior door kit outputs are provided as well.
8) What access control software works with the Isonas PowerNet reader-controller?
It runs on Pure Access cloud or Pure Access Manager for an on-premise install, and it also integrates with Open Options and Genetec. Microcode is field flashable, so firmware updates happen over the network rather than by swapping hardware.
9) Can I wire a door position switch and a request-to-exit device to the Isonas reader-controller?
Two configurable inputs are provided: one for door sense (door position switch) and a general purpose input that can be set as request to exit or auxiliary. Combined with the onboard lock output, that lets a single RC-04 handle a complete door - credential in, lock power out, door status and REX back - without an auxiliary interface board.
10) How does the Isonas reader protect against someone prying it off the wall?
Tamper detection is handled by an onboard accelerometer, which senses any movement or attempt to alter the unit and flags it before it becomes a breach. A metal back plate adds physical security, makes it a two-piece install (plate first, reader on after), and keeps read range consistent by holding the antenna at a fixed offset from the mounting surface.
11) Is this Isonas unit suitable for commercial buildings or is it a residential product?
Commercial. It is a hardwired commercial access control reader-controller for door openings, with a 10Mb Ethernet connection in half or full duplex and a keypad-backlit option in the wall mount keypad form factor. LED signalling gives reader status at the door.
