Schlage Electronics RCK15 BLK – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Schlage RCK15 reader controller need a separate power supply run to the door?
No. The RCK15 runs on Power over Ethernet (IEEE 802.3af, Class 0), so one Cat5e or Cat6 cable carries both data and power and there is no separate power run to the door. If you'd rather feed it locally, it accepts 10-13 VDC. Do not put 24 VDC on it, that voltage is not approved for the device. For integrators pulling new cable, this is the difference between one low voltage drop per opening and two.
2) Will the RCK15 keypad reader fit a standard single gang electrical box?
Yes. The RCK15 is built for single gang mounting and is a 1 gang size reader, so it lands on a standard single gang box or plate at the wall next to the opening. It is a wall mount device, not a mullion or door mounted reader, so plan the box location outside the door swing.
3) Can the RCK15 be mounted outdoors or on a metal door frame?
Both are covered. The RCK15 is rated for interior, exterior, metal and non-metal installation environments, and its operating range is -31 F to 151 F (-40 C to 66 C). That temperature band puts it on perimeter and gate side openings in cold climates, and mounting on metal will not detune the read.
4) Do I need a separate access control panel with the Schlage RCK15?
No. The RCK15 is a reader controller, meaning the reader and the door controller are the same device, so there is no panel in a closet and no reader to panel wiring. It has three configurable inputs on board for Door Position (DPS), Request to Exit (REX) and Auxiliary (AUX). That is the whole door in one gang box, which is why it gets specified on perimeter doors where running back to a panel is expensive.
5) What happens at the RCK15 door if the network goes down?
Access decisions keep working. In local mode the RCK15 decides at the device, holding 64,000 credentials, 5,000 events and 32 time schedules on board, so an offline network does not leave the opening dead. In host mode it runs real time against the host with capacity set by your host programming. Integrators often run local mode by choice, not just as a fallback, because decisions at the device mean faster response and less network traffic.
6) Will the RCK15 read the same credentials as my existing Schlage readers and wireless locks?
Yes, credential parity with Schlage readers and wireless locks is standard on the RCK15, so cards already issued in a Schlage based facility work at this opening. It is a multi technology proximity reader and also supports Bluetooth, NFC and smart credentials, which is what lets a property move to phone credentials without re-badging everyone at once. If you are on ISONAS credentials instead, parity for those is a factory orderable option and has to be specified at order time as CE-5902-0403.
7) What is the difference between the Schlage RCK15 and the Securitron R100 card reader?
They mount and credential differently. The Schlage Electronics RCK15 is a multi-technology proximity reader controller with a keypad, sized for a 1-gang single gang mounting box, so it recesses into a gang box at the door and accepts a PIN as well as a credential. The Securitron R100 is a surface mounted wireless card reader in the RH100 Series, so it lands on the face of the wall or frame rather than into a gang box, and it reads a card only with no keypad entry. Choose by the opening: a card-only surface application points to the R100, while a flush 1-gang box with card-plus-PIN entry points to the RCK15.
8) What has to be specified when ordering an RCK15 that cannot be changed in the field?
Credential parity is the one to get right on the order. Schlage credential parity is standard, but ISONAS credential parity is a factory orderable option that has to be called out as CE-5902-0403 when you order. Everything else on the RCK15, network settings, DHCP, mode, input assignments, is configured at commissioning through the ENGAGE mobile app.
9) What network requirements does the RCK15 IP reader controller put on the IT department?
Modest ones, and worth handing to IT before the install. The RCK15 uses 10/100 Ethernet, half or full duplex, over Cat5e, Cat6 or better, supports DHCP addressing, and works in either network host or client mode. Traffic is encrypted with TLS 1.2. The switch port has to supply 802.3af Class 0 PoE if you are not bringing local DC power.
10) Should I use a keypad reader like the RCK15 or a card only reader at this door?
Pick the keypad version when the opening needs a PIN, either on its own for people you do not want to badge (vendors, occasional access) or as a second factor on a high security or perimeter door where card alone is not enough. The RCK15 carries the keypad on the same single gang device, so you are not adding a second plate. If the door only ever sees cards or phones, a card only reader such as the Securitron R100 surface mounted wireless card reader covers it without the keypad.
11) Will the RCK15 work with my existing access control software, or am I locked into Schlage?
The RCK15 integrates into open PACS solutions, including Pure Access Cloud, so it is not confined to a single head end. It runs in either host mode, where the host system makes the real time decisions, or local mode at the device. Commissioning is done through the ENGAGE mobile app regardless of which platform you run it under.
12) How does the RCK15 detect someone tampering with the reader?
Tamper detection is by accelerometer, so any physical altering of the reader is sensed and flagged rather than relying only on a back plate switch. Communication back to the host is secured with TLS 1.2. Between the two, prying at the device and intercepting the wire are both accounted for, which is the reason the RCK15 gets specified on perimeter and high security openings.
13) Does the RCK15 give the user any feedback at the door when a credential is presented?
Yes. There is an LED signal for reader status and an audible indicator that can be switched on or off. On a residential-style corridor or a hospitality property where beeping at 2 a.m. is a complaint, the audible can be turned off and the LED left to do the work.
14) Is the Schlage RCK15 suitable for a commercial building or is it a residential product?
Commercial. The RCK15 is a commercial grade electronic access control device aimed at perimeter and high security openings, and it scales by adding devices rather than by adding panel capacity, which is what suits it to multi-building campuses, healthcare and larger managed portfolios. It is black finish, model RCK15 BLK.
