Isonas RC-04-Enroll-MCT – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Isonas Pure IP reader-controller need a separate access control panel?
No panel. The Pure IP Reader-Controller makes the access decision at the door itself and connects over your existing network, so there's no control panel, no panel enclosure, and no home-run wiring back to a closet. Each door needs an Ethernet drop and that's the infrastructure. That's the whole architecture difference between this and a traditional reader wired back to a board.
2) Will the Isonas mullion reader fit on a narrow aluminum storefront mullion?
The mullion form factor measures 5.1 x 1.7 x 0.71 inches, so it's sized for the narrow face of a storefront or glass-door mullion. If you have flat wall surface to work with instead, Isonas also builds the same reader-controller in a wall mount at 5.1 x 3.25 x 0.17 inches and a wall mount keypad at the same 5.1 x 3.25 x 0.17 inches. Measure your mullion face before ordering: under 1.7 inches of usable width and the mullion body will overhang.
3) Can the Isonas Pure IP reader-controller power the electric strike or maglock, or do I need a separate power supply?
It provides 600mA of conditioned lock power off the 8 wire pigtail, and supports both fail safe and fail secure lock hardware. If your strike or mag draws within 600mA you can run the lock straight off the reader-controller with no separate lock power supply. Anything above that draw needs its own supply. Power to the unit itself is either PoE (IEEE 802.3af, Class 0) or 12VDC in, with an input range of 9 to 16V.
4) What credential cards will the Isonas 125kHz and 13.56MHz reader read?
It reads both frequencies plus phones. On 13.56MHz that covers Mifare Classic, Ultralight and Mifare Plus, iClass by card serial number, and ISO14443A and B; MiFare DesFire EV2 reads by CSN on ISONAS credentials. On the low frequency side it reads 125 kHz using FSK modulation. Bluetooth Low Energy 4.1 and later is supported for mobile credentials. Note the iClass and DesFire support is CSN only, which matters if your existing site uses a secured application area on those cards rather than the serial number.
5) Will the Isonas reader keep working if the network or the cloud connection drops?
Yes, because the decision is made locally with host programming. The unit holds 64,000 credentials, 5,000 events and 32 time schedules on board, so cardholders keep getting in on schedule while the link is down and the events buffer until it comes back. That on-board capacity is the number to check against your headcount if you're standardizing a campus or a multi-tenant building.
6) Can the Isonas Pure IP mullion reader be mounted outside on an exterior door?
It's built for it. Conformal coated for weather resistance, rated IP56, and the operating range is -40F to 135F (-40C to 57C), which covers unheated exterior openings in northern climates. It also carries two exterior door kit outputs for driving hardware on the secure side, and an accelerometer based tamper detection that flags the unit being pried or struck.
7) Do I need a keypad version if I want PIN entry at the door?
The mullion reader-controller is a card and mobile credential reader. PIN entry lives on the wall mount keypad form factor, which measures 5.1 x 3.25 x 0.17 inches and has a backlit keypad. So if the opening needs card plus PIN, or PIN only after hours, order the keypad wall mount rather than the mullion unit. Both share the same LED reader status indicator and the same controller behind it.
8) What is the difference between an enrollment reader with a desk stand and a door reader?
Same Pure IP Reader-Controller hardware, but the desk stand version sits on the admin's desk so credentials can be enrolled into the system without walking out to a door. It ships with a 7.5 inch extension cable and a 19mm diameter adapter for the stand. It's still a full reader-controller, so it isn't a dedicated USB desktop enroller: it talks Ethernet over TCP/IP on a standard RJ45 cable, same as a door unit.
9) What network settings does the Isonas Pure IP reader need on my LAN?
Standard RJ45 Ethernet running TCP/IP at 10Mb, half or full duplex, with DHCP addressing supported so it'll pull an address off the network without static assignment. It runs in either network host or client mode, and the microcode is field flashable, so firmware updates happen over the wire instead of pulling readers off doors. On a PoE switch the same cable carries power and data to the opening.
10) Does the Isonas reader-controller have inputs for a door position switch and request to exit?
Two configurable inputs. One takes door sense, so you get door held and forced door alarms off a position switch, and the other is a general purpose input you can set as request to exit or auxiliary. That's enough to run a standard single opening with a REX motion sensor or a switched exit device, but if your job needs both REX and an aux input on the same door, you're out of inputs.
11) Can tenants use their phones instead of cards on the Isonas reader?
Yes, Bluetooth Low Energy 4.1 and later is supported, so mobile credentials work alongside physical cards on the same reader. For a property manager that means you can move new tenants to phone credentials without swapping hardware, and keep issuing 125 kHz or 13.56MHz cards to anyone who wants one. The unit reads all three credential types.
12) Is the Isonas Pure IP reader-controller rated for commercial use or is it a residential product?
Commercial. It's a hardwired access control device built for commercial openings, and the supporting specs bear that out: UL-294 compliance, IP56 exposure rating, and a -40F to 135F operating range. This is not a residential smart lock, and it does not include a lock. You supply the electric strike, maglock or electrified lockset the reader-controller releases.
13) How close does a card have to be to the Isonas prox reader?
About 3 inches typical on RFID cards, with a read speed under 250 milliseconds. That's a present-the-card range, not a hands-free one, so plan on the reader being within arm's reach of the pull side of the door rather than out at a drive-up lane. The mullion housing also puts it right at the door edge where a cardholder naturally reaches.
