Kawneer KW035143-17 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What exactly is the Kawneer KW035143-17 cylinder guard package, and what does it do?
It's a genuine Kawneer service part that protects and secures the cylinder installation on Kawneer commercial exit device assemblies. It ships as a complete cylinder guard package rather than a loose plate, so a technician has the guard components needed for the swap in one part number. Finish is Clear Aluminum, matching standard Kawneer exit device hardware.
2) Is the KW035143-17 a complete exit device or just a replacement piece?
Just a replacement piece. It's a cylinder guard package only, classed as a replacement part for exit devices, so it won't get you a working exit device on its own. You order it when the existing Kawneer device is staying in the door and only the cylinder guard needs to be restored.
3) Will the Kawneer cylinder guard fit a Von Duprin or Adams Rite exit device?
No. The KW035143-17 is a Kawneer service part cut for Kawneer exit device assemblies; the fit is manufacturer-specific. If the device on the door is another brand, source that brand's cylinder guard instead of trying to adapt this one.
4) Do I need to order a finish option for the KW035143-17 cylinder guard?
No finish choice to make. The part is supplied in Clear Aluminum only, under the single part number KW035143-17, which is the standard finish on Kawneer aluminum entrance hardware. If the rest of your storefront hardware is dark bronze or black, the guard will not match.
5) Does the KW035143-17 package include a cylinder?
No cylinder is included. It is the guard hardware only, so the existing mortise cylinder gets reused or you order a cylinder separately in the keyway your building is keyed to.
6) Is this cylinder guard rated for commercial traffic or is it a light-duty residential part?
It's a commercial part. Kawneer classes the cylinder guard package for commercial door hardware use, which is what you want on high-traffic aluminum storefront and institutional openings, offices, schools, healthcare, retail, government buildings and multi-tenant residential entrances.
