Keedex K-BXMOR5 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the Keedex K-BXMOR5 weldable box actually for?
It's a steel weld-in box that gets welded into a gate frame or tube steel so a mortise lock has somewhere to sit. Baldwin and Baton 1900 mortise locks are what it's cut for. On a hollow metal gate there is no door edge to mortise into, so the box gives you the pocket, the lock case support, and the faceplate opening in one weldable piece.
2) Will a Baldwin mortise lock fit the Keedex K-BXMOR5 box?
That's exactly what the K-BXMOR5 is built for. It's sized for Baldwin mortise locks and the Baton 1900. The box runs a 2-3/4 inch backset, so the lock going in must be a 2-3/4 inch backset case, not a 2-3/8. If your Baldwin case is a different backset the trim holes won't line up with the box.
3) I have a Schlage or Sargent mortise lock on my gate. Can I use the K-BXMOR5?
Not the right box. The K-BXMOR5 is cut for the Baldwin and Baton 1900 mortise case, and mortise boxes are model specific, the case pocket and the trim hole locations differ brand to brand. For a different manufacturer's mortise case you want the Keedex weld box built for that lock instead. Match the box to the lock you already own, not the other way round.
4) What gauge steel is the Keedex weldable mortise box, and can I weld it to aluminum?
14 gauge steel. It welds to steel gate frames and tube steel, which is what it's meant for. Aluminum is a different job entirely, steel won't weld to it, so on an aluminum gate this box is the wrong part.
5) Does the Keedex K-BXMOR5 gate box come with the mortise lock?
No. The box is the weld-in housing only. You supply the mortise lock separately, a Baldwin or Baton 1900 case on a 2-3/4 inch backset, plus your trim and cylinder. Budget the lock, the box, and the welding as three separate line items on the job.
6) Is the K-BXMOR5 a commercial gate box or a residential one?
Commercial rated. It's 14 gauge steel and gets welded permanently into the frame, which is the construction used on commercial and multi-family gates, driveway gates, and service entries rather than a residential door.
