Warnings
- Because moisture, films, or other surface contaminants are conductive, Klein insulated tools must be kept clean, dry, and free of any surface contaminants.
- Always inspect your tools before use. Destroy tool if insulation becomes damaged in any way.
- Do NOT touch uninsulated portion of the tool or any conductive object when either might contact an energized source.
- Wear approved eye protection.
- Only use tools that are marked with the official international 1000-volt rating symbol shown above, if there is any chance that the tools will make contact with an energized source.
- Whenever possible, always de-energize lines and equipment prior to working on or around them. Klein insulated tools are designed only to reduce the chance of injury where the tool may make contact with an energized source.

Klein Tools 11049-INS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Klein 11049 strip solid wire or only stranded?
The Klein Tools 11049 is cut for stranded wire, 8 through 16 AWG. The stripping holes are sized to stranded conductor diameters, so solid wire of the same gauge number will not land in the right hole cleanly. If you're working solid THHN, use a stripper marked for solid wire instead.
2) What is the difference between Klein 11049 and 11049-INS?
Same tool, two builds. The 11049 is the non-insulated version. The 11049-INS is the insulated version, individually dielectrically tested and rated to the 1000-volt international symbol, and it meets or exceeds ASTM F1505-10, IEC 60900-2018, CAN/ULC-60900-09, NFPA 70E 2011 ed. and CSA Z462. If there is any chance the tool contacts an energized source, order the -INS.
3) Is the insulated Klein 11049-INS approved for energized work under NFPA 70E?
The 11049-INS carries the 1000-volt rating symbol and meets or exceeds NFPA 70E 2011 ed. and CSA Z462, along with ASTM F1505-10, IEC 60900-2018 and CAN/ULC-60900-09. Klein's own guidance still applies: de-energize lines and equipment whenever possible, since the insulation only reduces the chance of injury on incidental contact. Keep it clean and dry, inspect before every use, and destroy the tool if the insulation is damaged.
4) Will this Klein stripper work in a crowded panel or box?
That's what the 11049 is built around. It's a compact, lightweight stripper/cutter with a narrow nose that reaches into tight places, and it's spring loaded so it self-opens between strips when you only have one hand free in a box.
5) Can the Klein 11049 cut wire and form loops, or do I need separate pliers?
It gauges, cuts, strips and loops stranded wire in the one tool, so you're not swapping to a separate cutter or needle nose to make a terminal loop. Cutting is within the same 8-16 AWG stranded range.
6) Will the 11049 handle 6 AWG or 18 AWG wire?
No. The range stops at 8 AWG on the heavy end and 16 AWG on the light end, stranded. For 18 AWG and finer control wiring, or anything larger than 8 AWG, you need a different stripper. Forcing an out-of-range conductor into a stripping hole nicks strands.
7) Are these Klein strippers made in the USA for prevailing-wage or Buy American jobs?
Both the 11049 and 11049-INS are listed as Made in USA. That matters if your institutional or government spec carries a domestic-sourcing requirement on tooling.
8) How durable are the stripping holes on the Klein 11049?
The tool is hardened spring steel with precision-ground stripping holes, which is what keeps the insulation coming off clean rather than tearing as the holes wear. For MRO crews standardizing a tool crib, that's the wear point to watch, and it's the part Klein hardened.
