Klein Tools BD410 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Klein BD410 keystone screwdriver insulated for live electrical work?
No. The BD410 is not insulated and will not protect against electrical shock, so it should not be used on energized circuits. If you need to work live, you need a 1000V-rated insulated screwdriver instead. Klein's warnings on this driver also say not to use it to pry or chisel, and to wear approved eye protection.
2) What shank lengths does the Klein 3/8-Inch keystone screwdriver come in?
Two lengths: a 10-inch shank, ordered as BD410, and a 12-inch shank, ordered as BD412. Both carry the same 3/8-inch (9.5 mm) keystone tip, so pick on reach rather than tip size - the 12-inch is the one for recessed terminals and deep panel work.
3) Can I put a wrench on this Klein screwdriver for extra torque?
Yes, the shank is square, so you can get an open-end wrench on it to break loose a seized slotted screw. The handle also has internal flanges anchoring the shaft against twisting, and the oversized Comfordome handle is 35 percent larger than comparable handles for up to 50 percent more hand torque. Just do not use it as a pry bar or chisel.
4) What is a keystone tip and when should I use it instead of a cabinet tip screwdriver?
A keystone tip flares out wider than the shank at the end, which gives more bearing surface in the slot and takes more torque without twisting out. That makes it the choice for general electrical and MRO work on slotted machine screws, panel screws and terminal lugs. A cabinet tip, by contrast, is ground straight down to the shank diameter so it can drop into a counterbored or recessed hole - use that when the screw sits in a tight well that a flared keystone tip will not enter. This driver is the keystone pattern at 3/8-inch (9.5 mm).
5) Does the Klein BD410 meet a recognized standard for hand tools?
It meets or exceeds the applicable ASME / ANSI specifications for screwdrivers, which is the line institutional and MRO buyers usually need on a tool spec. Note that it carries no electrical insulation rating.
6) Will this screwdriver hold a screw on the tip magnetically?
No, the tip is not magnetized, so it will not pick up or retain a loose screw. Working overhead in a ceiling box or up a ladder, plan on starting the screw by hand or using a screw-holding driver.
7) What is the blade and handle made of, and will it rust in a damp mechanical room?
The blade is nickel-chrome, precision forged and polished with a black tip, and the shaft is chrome plated to help resist corrosion. The handle is a tough amber plastic Comfordome in yellow. Steel construction overall, and it is made in the USA.
