1) Will Klein 450 insulated cable staples work in my existing staple gun?
No. The Klein 450 insulated staples fit Klein Tools loose cable staplers, Cat. Nos. 450-01 and 450-100, exclusively. Klein states they are not compatible with other brands of staplers, so if you are running a different manufacturer's cable stapler you need that brand's staples.
2) Which Klein 450 staple size do I need for 12/2 or 14/2 Romex?
Pick the size by the cable's actual cross section. Klein offers four sizes: 1/4 x 5/16 inch (450-001), 5/16 x 5/16 inch (450-002), 11/32 x 19/32 inch (450-003), and 31/64 x 13/64 inch (450-004). The 11/32 x 19/32 inch size is the one Klein calls out for NM (Romex) gauges such as 14/3, 14/3G and 12/3, and for other wire up to 11/32 x 19/32 inch (9 mm x 15 mm). Smaller two-conductor NM generally takes one of the smaller crowns, so measure the cable and match it rather than guessing.
3) Can these staples be used on low voltage data and coax runs, or only on NM cable?
Both. The Klein 450 insulated staples secure flat and round voice, data and video cable as well as NM (Romex) nonmetallic sheathed cable. That makes them usable for a structured wiring rough-in and a branch circuit rough-in with the same gun, as long as the cable fits the crown size you choose.
4) Will an insulated staple damage the cable jacket the way a plain wire staple can?
The insulated design is the point of this staple. The Klein 450 staples carry plastic insulation across the crown to protect the cable jacket from damage as the staple seats, so the sheath is not being crushed by bare steel. Construction is steel and plastic.
5) How many staples come in a box of Klein 450 staples?
Each pack holds 300 staples. For a crew stocking a van across multiple crown sizes, note that all four sizes (450-001 through 450-004) are the same loose-staple format for the Klein 450-01 and 450-100 staplers, so you can carry several sizes and one gun.
6) Do these staples hold in soft wood framing or do they back out?
Klein applies a special coating to the leg to increase holding power, which is what keeps the staple seated in framing lumber. They are made in the USA and sold for professional use only.
