Klein Tools 646-7/16-INS – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between the 646-7/16, 646-7/16-INS and 646-7/16M nut drivers?
Same 7/16-inch SAE hex opening on all three, with the difference in the shaft. The 646-7/16 is the standard hollow-shaft driver, the 646-7/16-INS adds the two-layer 1000-volt insulation, and the 646-7/16M has a magnetic tip for holding the nut or bolt on the driver. Pick the INS for energized panel work, the M for overhead or blind fastening where you cannot start a nut by hand.
2) Will a 7/16 nut driver with a hollow shaft reach down a long threaded stud?
That is what the hollow shaft is for. The shaft measures 6 inches (15.2 cm) and is bored through, so the protruding end of a long bolt or stud passes up inside it instead of bottoming out. It is the usual way to get at nuts on stacked circuit boards or long bolt applications where a solid-shaft driver stops as soon as it hits the thread. Overall tool length is 10.313 inches (26.2 cm).
3) Can I keep using an insulated nut driver if the orange coating gets nicked?
No. Klein's instruction is to destroy the tool if the insulation is damaged in any way, and specifically if the white inner layer shows through the orange outer layer, or if the orange cracks or breaks. The two coatings are a system, so a nick that exposes the white one means the tool is out of service. Keep insulated tools clean and dry too, since moisture, films and surface contaminants conduct.
4) How do I tell which size Klein nut driver I've grabbed out of the pouch?
Klein marks the size on the end of the handle with Tip-Ident, so you read 7/16 off the butt of the driver without pulling the whole set out. The handle color code on the 646-7/16 is brown, which is how techs who standardize on Klein sets identify sizes by sight.
5) What is the shaft made of on the Klein 646 series nut driver?
Steel shaft with a Cushion-Grip handle. The handle shape is what lets you put real torque on a nut without chewing up your palm, which matters on a long run of panel screws or terminal nuts.
