Klein Tools 646-1/4 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can a Klein 646 nut driver run down a long bolt or stud, or does the shaft bottom out?
The 646 has a full hollow shaft, 6 inches long, so the bolt or stud passes up inside the shaft instead of stopping the driver. That is what makes it the tool for stacked circuit boards, deep recesses, and extra-long threaded studs where a solid-shaft driver would stall as soon as the thread filled the socket.
2) Is the Klein 646 nut driver safe to use on live electrical work?
No. The 646 is not insulated and will not protect against electrical shock. De-energize the circuit before using it. If you need to work on or near energized parts, you need a 1000V insulated nut driver instead, not this one. Eye protection is called for either way.
3) What sizes does the Klein 646 hollow-shaft nut driver come in, and are they metric or SAE?
Three SAE (inch) sizes: 1/4-inch (646-1/4), 11/32-inch (646-11/32), and 1/2-inch (646-1/2). There is no metric option in the 646 hollow shaft, so if you are working on metric hex heads you need a metric driver line.
4) Will the Klein 646 hold a loose nut on the tip while I start it one-handed?
No, the 646 is not magnetic. Overhead or blind starts need a second hand or a magnetized driver. The trade-off is deliberate: a hollow shaft can't hold a magnet insert because the bore has to stay clear for the bolt to pass through.
5) Does the Klein 646 nut driver meet a recognized tool standard, and where is it made?
The 646 meets or exceeds applicable ASME/ANSI specifications and is made in the USA. For MRO and government buyers who need domestic-origin hand tools on a purchase order, that origin statement is on the manufacturer's own product data.
6) How do you tell the three 646 drivers apart quickly in a pouch?
Two ways. Tip-Ident marks the size right at the tip, and the end of the Cushion-Grip handle is color coded, so the size reads off the butt of the handle when the drivers are standing in a pouch or bucket. Useful when 1/4, 11/32 and 1/2 are all riding together.
7) Is the shaft on the Klein 646 pressed into the handle, and will it spin loose under torque?
The handle uses internal flanges that anchor the shaft against twisting, and the Cushion-Grip handle is sized to let you put real torque on a fastener. The shaft is premium chrome plated, which also keeps corrosion off a tool that lives in a damp van or a service bag.
