  • Warnings

    • Because moisture, films, or other surface contaminants are conductive, Klein insulated tools must be kept clean, dry, and free of any surface contaminants.
    • Do NOT touch uninsulated portion of the tool or any conductive object when either might contact an energized source.
    • Wear approved eye protection. Always inspect your tools before use. Do not use if orange coating cracks, breaks or becomes damaged. Destroy tool if white layer shows through orange layer.
    • Always inspect your tools before use. Destroy tool if insulation becomes damaged in any way.
    • Whenever possible, always de-energize lines and equipment prior to working on or around them. Klein insulated tools are designed only to reduce the chance of injury where the tool may make contact with an energized source.
    • Only use tools that are marked with the official international 1000-volt rating symbol shown above, if there is any chance that the tools will make contact with an energized source.
  • Features

    • Cushion-Grip™ handles for greater torque and comfort
    • Made in USA
    • Tip-Ident Quickly Identifies Nut Driver Size
    • Hollow shafts make it possible to work on stacked circuit boards or other long bolt applications
    • Thick, exceptionally tough, high-dielectric white inner coating is bonded to the tool with a flame retardant, impact-resistant, bright orange outer coating
    • Tip-Ident quickly identifies nut driver size
    • Individually tested to exceed the IEC 60900 and ASTM F1505 standards, for insulated tools, and clearly marked with the official 1000-volt rating symbol
    • Two layers of insulation provide protection against electric shock

Klein Tools 646-1/4-INS – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Klein 646 insulated nut driver rated for live electrical work at 1000 volts?
The Klein Tools 646 insulated nut driver is individually tested to exceed IEC 60900 and ASTM F1505 for insulated tools and is marked with the official 1000-volt rating symbol. It uses two layers: a high-dielectric white inner coating bonded to the tool under a flame-retardant, impact-resistant orange outer coating. If the orange cracks or the white shows through, the tool is done and must be destroyed, not used. De-energize whenever possible; the insulation only reduces the chance of injury on accidental contact.
2) Will a hollow shaft nut driver run down a long threaded stud or bolt?
Yes, that is the point of the hollow shaft. The 646 has a 6-inch (15.2 cm) hollow shaft, so protruding bolt or stud ends pass up inside the shaft instead of bottoming out on the driver. That is what makes it workable on stacked circuit boards and long-bolt assemblies where a solid-shaft driver stops as soon as the thread ends hit the tip.
3) What sizes does the Klein 646 insulated nut driver come in?
Three SAE hex sizes: 1/4-inch (646-1/4-INS), 11/32-inch (646-11/32-INS), and 1/2-inch (646-1/2-INS). Sizing is inch-based SAE, not metric, and the Tip-Ident marking on the handle tells you the size at a glance when several are in the pouch.
4) Is the Klein 646 nut driver magnetic? Will it hold the nut on the tip?
No. The 646 is non-magnetic, so it will not retain a loose nut or hold onto dropped hardware. If you are working overhead or into a panel where a dropped nut is a problem, you will want a magnetic-tip driver instead, or start the nut by hand.
5) Can I use an insulated nut driver on a control panel that might have moisture or dust on it?
Clean and dry it first. Moisture, films, and other surface contaminants are conductive, so Klein insulated tools have to be kept clean, dry, and free of surface contaminants for the insulation system to do its job. Also keep off the uninsulated portion of the tool and off any conductive object that could contact an energized source, and wear approved eye protection.
6) Do I need 11/32-inch or 1/4-inch for standard electrical box and panel screws?
Both are offered in the 646 line, and which you need is set by the hardware, not the tool. 11/32-inch is the common size for panel and device screws with hex heads in US electrical work, and 1/4-inch covers the smaller sheet-metal hex heads; 1/2-inch handles larger studs and lag heads. All three are SAE inch sizes and all three carry the same 6-inch hollow shaft and 1000-volt insulation.
7) What is the handle on the Klein 646 made of, and does it give enough grip for tight nuts?
The handle is high-dielectric plastic with Klein's Cushion-Grip design, which is shaped for higher torque and comfort rather than just insulation. The shaft itself is steel. Handle cross section measures 1 inch by 1 inch.
8) Are Klein 646 insulated nut drivers made in the USA?
Yes, the 646 insulated nut drivers are made in the USA, which matters on jobs with domestic-sourcing requirements on tooling purchases.
