Klein Tools 87920 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I wrap this anchorage connector around an I-beam for a fall arrest tie-off?
Yes, that's exactly what it's built for. The nylon choker wraps around an I-beam or similar structural member to create an anchorage point for a fall-arrest connecting device. The half-twist design keeps the 2-inch (51 mm) webbing flat and in continuous contact with the steel, which cuts down wear and stress on the strap where it bears on the flange.
2) Is this Klein choker a body belt or part of a harness?
No. It is an anchorage connector only, the link between the structure and your connecting device. Klein states plainly it is not an occupational protective belt for personal use. You still need a full body harness and a lanyard or self-retracting lifeline to make a complete personal fall arrest system.
3) What lengths does the Klein Tools nylon choker anchorage connector come in?
Two lengths: 3-foot (model 87920) and 5-foot (model 87921). Pick the length by the girth of what you're wrapping, the webbing has to pass around the member and come back to the D-ring. A wide flange beam or a column generally needs the 5-foot; smaller structural members are fine with the 3-foot.
4) What kind of D-ring is on this anchorage strap and will it hold up outdoors?
A forged circle D-ring with a corrosion-resistant finish and a wear-minimizing roller, and each one is 100 percent proof-loaded to meet OSHA regulations. The roller is what lets the hook or connector seat without chewing the webbing at the ring.
5) Why choose a nylon choker anchor over a cable sling or a beam clamp?
A webbing choker spreads the load over a 2-inch flat face against the steel instead of a narrow point, and the half-twist keeps it lying flat so it does not bunch and abrade. It also wraps members of varying shape and size, where a beam clamp only fits a flange within its jaw range. The tradeoff: webbing is vulnerable to hot work, sharp edges and chemical exposure, so on a cutting or welding deck a wire rope or chain sling is the better pick.
6) Which part number do I order for the 5-foot Klein nylon choker?
Klein Tools 87921 is the 5-foot version. The 3-foot is 87920. Same construction on both, only the webbing length changes.
