Klein Tools 65600 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What socket sizes does the Klein Tools 1/4-inch drive 6-point socket come in?
Nine hex sizes across the 1/4-inch drive standard-length range: 3/16, 7/32, 1/4, 9/32, 5/16, 11/32, 3/8, 7/16 and 1/2 inch. Order by Klein part number, 65600 through 65608 in that same order (65600 is 3/16, 65608 is 1/2).
2) Will these Klein sockets fit my 3/8-inch drive ratchet?
Not directly. These are 1/4-inch square drive sockets, so they need a 1/4-inch drive ratchet, extension or spinner handle. If all you have is a 3/8-inch ratchet you'll need a 3/8-inch female to 1/4-inch male adapter, and note that a 1/4-inch drive is not built for the torque a 3/8-inch ratchet can apply.
3) Is a 6-point socket better than a 12-point for working on rounded or worn nuts?
For worn or tight fasteners, 6-point is the one you want. These Klein sockets are 6-point, so the drive load is carried on the flats of the hex rather than the corners, which is why Klein describes the snug fit as keeping the bolt or nut in shape. A 12-point engages every 30 degrees instead of 60, so it's easier to start in cramped positions but far more likely to round off a fastener that's already chewed up.
4) Are these standard length or deep sockets?
Standard length. Klein's 65600 series is a standard 6-point socket, so it seats on a nut with normal stud projection. For a long stud, a threaded rod, or a nut down inside a recess, you need a deep socket instead.
5) Which sizes should I stock for electrical panel and strut work?
Klein lists these under its electrical line, and the sizes that see the most use in that work are the ones for 1/4-20 and 5/16-18 hardware: 7/16 inch (part 65607) for 1/4-20 nuts and 1/2 inch (65608) for 5/16-18. The 3/8 inch (65606) covers #10-24 hardware in strut and box mounting. Smaller sizes down to 3/16 inch (65600) cover terminal and lug screws.
6) Are these sockets sold individually or as a set?
Individually, one hex size per part number. Each size carries its own Klein number, for example 65604 for 5/16 inch and 65605 for 11/32 inch, so you can buy just the size you broke or lost rather than a full set.
7) Can I run these on an impact driver or impact wrench?
No. These are chrome-finish hand sockets for use with a hand ratchet or spinner on a 1/4-inch drive. Impact tools call for a black-oxide impact-rated socket; chrome hand sockets can crack or shatter under impact loads.
8) What are these sockets made of, and will the finish hold up in a truck or gang box?
Forged alloy steel with a chrome finish. The chrome is there for corrosion protection through daily handling in a pouch or tool box, and the forged alloy steel body is what takes the wrenching load.
9) Are the sizes in inches or metric?
Inch (SAE) hex sizes only, from 3/16 through 1/2 inch in sixteenths and thirty-seconds. There is no metric size in the 65600 range, so for metric hardware you need a separate metric 1/4-inch drive socket.
