Klein Tools 65800 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What socket sizes does the Klein Tools 1/2-inch drive 12-point socket line come in?
Ten SAE sizes, all standard (shallow) length on a 1/2-inch square drive: 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 11/16, 3/4, 13/16, 7/8, 15/16 and 1 inch. The part numbers run in order, 65800 for 7/16 up through 65809 for 1 inch, so 11/16 is 65804 and 3/4 is 65805.
2) Can I run these Klein sockets on a 3/8-inch ratchet or an impact wrench?
No on both counts. The square drive is 1/2 inch, so it mates only with 1/2-inch drive ratchets, breaker bars and extensions unless you add an adapter. And these are chrome-finish hand sockets, not black-oxide impact sockets, so keep them off impact guns.
3) Will a 12-point socket work on a standard hex bolt, or do I need 6-point?
A 12-point drives any standard hex head, since the twelve broached points give you two engagement positions per flat instead of one. That halves the swing needed in a tight panel or junction box, which is why Klein specs these for electrical work. Where they give up ground is heavily rounded or badly rusted fasteners and high-torque breaking, and there a 6-point gives more flat contact. For clean nuts and bolts the 12-point snug fit holds the head shape.
4) Are these standard length or deep sockets?
Standard length. The Klein 65800 through 65809 sockets are shallow-wall hex sockets, so they seat on a nut with little protruding stud. If you are running a nut down a long threaded rod or reaching a recessed bolt, you want a deep socket instead.
5) Are the Klein 65800 series sockets metric or SAE?
SAE fractional inch only, from 7/16 up to 1 inch. There is no metric option in this run, so for metric hardware you need a separate metric set.
6) Which size Klein 1/2-inch drive socket do I order for 3/4-inch and 13/16-inch nuts?
The 3/4-inch socket is part number 65805 and the 13/16-inch is 65806. Both are standard length 12-point on a 1/2-inch square drive, same as the rest of the range.
7) Are these sold as a set or individually by size?
Individually. Each size carries its own part number, from 65800 (7/16-inch) through 65809 (1-inch), so you can buy just the size you are short of or build the range you need one piece at a time.
8) Is the chrome finish on these sockets going to hold up in a truck or on a job site?
Chrome plating is there for corrosion protection and it wipes clean of oil and grease, which is what you want for a socket living in a van drawer. It is a hand-tool finish though, so pair it with hand ratchets rather than impacts.
