Kwikset 968AO-15 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Which Kwikset handlesets does the 968AO Aliso interior pack fit?
It is built for Kwikset Signature Series 802 handlesets. Kwikset lists a whole family of 968 interior packs for the 802, including Abbey, Hancock, Laurel, Pismo, Polo, Tylo and Cove knobs plus lever styles like Ashfield, Tustin, Halifax and Milan, so you can pick the interior style that matches the rest of the house and still use the same exterior handleset.
2) Is there a Schlage or Weslock equivalent to the Kwikset 968 interior trim pack?
Yes, several. On the Schlage residential side, the F59 Accent lever interior pack is a Grade 2 dummy trim for 1-5/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the FC59 Alexandria glass knob interior trim adds a deadbolt thumbturn and covers 1-5/8 to 2-3/4 inch doors. Schlage's JH59 Broadway is inside trim for a handleset with a Collins deadbolt thumbturn, Grade 3, 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. From Weslock, the 6205 Utica Woodward dummy handleset trim covers 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors and the 1405 interconnected handleset dummy trim covers 1-3/4 to 2 inch. None of these mount to a Kwikset 802 exterior, so pick the one that matches the brand of exterior handleset already on the door.
3) Can I use a Kwikset 968 interior pack on a fire rated door?
Kwikset publishes an optional 1/3 hour UL fire rating across the functions in this line, but it specifically excludes the 802, along with 819 and 502. The 968AO Aliso interior pack is made for the 802 handleset, so do not plan on it for a fire rated opening.
4) What is the closest equivalent to the Kwikset 968AO Aliso interior pack if the door already has Schlage handleset hardware?
For a Schlage handleset, the interior trim equivalent is the Schlage Residential JH59 Broadway lever inside trim for handlesets, which includes a Collins deadbolt thumbturn and is a Grade 3 part covering doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick. The difference in operation matters: the Kwikset 968AO Aliso is a dummy pull-only interior pack with no thumbturn, while the JH59 is an entrance-function trim with the thumbturn built in. Match the trim to the handleset brand rather than mixing, since the spindle and mounting pattern are brand-specific.
5) Do I have to order a left-hand or right-hand version of the Aliso interior pack?
No handing to specify. The Aliso interior pack is fully reversible and fits both right and left hand doors, so one part number covers either swing. That makes it simpler to stock across a building where the doors run both directions.
6) Is the Aliso interior pack a knob or a lever?
Knob. The Aliso interior trim uses a knob-style pull in a traditional look, finished in satin nickel. If you want a lever on the inside of an 802 handleset instead, Kwikset makes 968 interior packs in Ashfield, Tustin, Halifax, Milan, Montreal, Pembroke and several other lever styles.
7) Which interior handleset trim carries a higher ANSI/BHMA grade than the Kwikset 968AO Aliso?
The Kwikset 968AO Aliso interior pack is ANSI/BHMA Grade 3. If a specification calls for Grade 2 interior trim, the Schlage Residential F59 Accent lever interior pack and the Schlage Residential FC59 Alexandria glass knob interior trim pack are both Grade 2. Note the trim style changes with them - the F59 is a lever and the FC59 is a glass knob, versus the pull-only grip of the Aliso pack.
8) Is the Weslock 7900 Carlow interior trim a substitute for the Kwikset 968AO Aliso pack?
No. The Weslock 7900 Carlow interior handleset trim is a single-cylinder trim made for Greystone or Rockford handlesets, and it is supplied left hand, covering 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. The Kwikset 968AO Aliso is a dummy pull-only pack that is reversible and fits either a right or left handed door. If handing is not yet fixed on the opening, or the job calls for non-operating interior trim, the Carlow is the wrong part.
9) What is the simplest interior trim option if I only need to fill out the inside of a handleset with no locking hardware?
Dummy-function interior trim is the simplest route. The Kwikset 968AO Aliso interior pack is pull-only and non-functioning on its own, installing with just a screwdriver. Comparable dummy-function interior handleset trims include the Weslock 6205 Utica Woodward for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors and the Weslock 1405 interconnected handleset dummy interior trim for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. All three leave the locking to the exterior pack or a separate deadbolt.
10) Only one finish? What color is the 968AO Aliso interior pack?
Satin nickel is the only finish this one comes in, ordered as model 968AO-15. If you need the Aliso interior trim in another color to match existing hardware, it isn't offered here in a second finish.
11) What tools do I need to install a Kwikset 968 interior pack on an existing 802 handleset?
A screwdriver. The interior pack mounts through the existing handleset prep and goes on in minutes, no drilling or special tooling, which is why property managers use these to restyle entries without touching the door.
