Kwikset 968BLRH-26D- – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the 968BL Balboa interior trim fit any Kwikset handleset, or only certain ones?
It is built for Kwikset Signature Series 802 handlesets. Kwikset's 968 interior packs are matched to that 802 exterior, so pairing it with a different Kwikset handleset series is not what it is made for. If you want a different interior style on the same 802 exterior, the 968 family also includes Abbey, Ashfield, Commonwealth, Halifax, Hancock, Katella, Laurel, Lisbon, Milan, Montreal, Pembroke, Pismo, Singapore, Tustin, Aliso, Cove, Delta, Dorian, Henley, Ladera RDT, Ladera SQT, Polo and Tylo trims.
2) Do I have to specify handing when I order the Balboa 968BL interior pack?
Yes, handing is an order choice here. The Balboa interior pack is sold in Left Hand and Right Hand versions, each available in all five finishes. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your left it is a left hand door. Pick the hand that matches the opening.
3) Can I use this Kwikset 968BL Balboa trim on a fire rated door?
No. Kwikset's optional 1/3 hour UL fire rating covers all functions except the 802, 819 and 502, and this Balboa pack is the interior trim for the 802 handleset. For a fire rated opening you need hardware that carries the rating, not this assembly.
4) Will the Kwikset 968BL Balboa interior pack work as a keyed entry trim?
No. The 968BL Balboa interior pack is a dummy lever with no latching or keyed function, listed for use with a Kwikset Signature Series 802 handleset exterior pack. For a keyed single cylinder inside trim, the Weslock 2100 Julienne interior single cylinder handleset trim is an entry function trim for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Weslock 7900 Carlow interior single cylinder handleset trim for Greystone or Rockford is a single cylinder function trim in the same 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thickness range.
5) I need the inside trim to include a deadbolt thumbturn - what should I order instead of the Kwikset 968BL Balboa pull only pack?
The 968BL Balboa pack is a pull only, non-functioning interior pack, so it carries no deadbolt thumbturn. If the inside needs a thumbturn, the Schlage Residential JH59 Broadway lever inside trim for handlesets includes a Collins deadbolt thumbturn and is a Grade 3 entrance trim for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. The Schlage Residential FC59 Alexandria glass knob interior trim pack also comes with a deadbolt thumbturn and covers 1-5/8 inch to 2-3/4 inch doors.
6) What is the closest equivalent to the Kwikset 968BL Balboa interior pack from another brand?
The Kwikset 968BL Balboa interior pack is a non-functioning dummy lever trim for a handleset. The closest peers in dummy function are the Schlage Residential F59 Accent lever interior pack, a Grade 2 dummy trim, and the Weslock 1405 interconnected handleset dummy interior trim, which fits doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick. The Weslock 6205 Utica Woodward interior dummy handleset trim is also a dummy trim and covers a wider 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch door thickness range. All three are inside trim only and, like the 968BL, must be paired with an exterior pack to make a complete entry set.
7) Is the Balboa lever interior pack ADA compliant for a rental unit?
The Balboa interior pack is a lever design and meets ADA/ANSI A117.1 requirements, which is why lever trim gets specified over knobs on accessible units. Keep in mind it is residential-duty hardware, not commercial grade.
8) What finishes does the Kwikset 968BL Balboa interior pack come in so I can match my other doors?
Five finishes, both hands in each: 619 Satin Nickel, 625 Polished Chrome, 626 Satin Chrome, 510 Venetian Bronze and 605 Polished Brass. Match the finish code on the existing 802 exterior pack and the trim will read as one set across the entry.
9) How hard is it to swap just the interior trim on an existing 802 handleset?
It is a screwdriver job. The Balboa pack installs in minutes with no drilling, since it mounts to the existing 802 handleset prep. That makes it a practical fix for a scratched or wrong-finish interior lever without touching the exterior half or the door bore.
10) My door is 2 inches thick - is the Kwikset 968BL Balboa pack or one of the other interior trims the right call?
For thicker doors, the Schlage Residential FC59 Alexandria interior trim pack covers 1-5/8 inch to 2-3/4 inch, the widest range in the comparable set. The Weslock 6205 Utica Woodward dummy trim spans 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Weslock 1405, 2100 Julienne and 7900 Carlow trims are all rated 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. The Schlage F59 Accent pack is narrower at 1-5/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the JH59 Broadway at 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch.
11) Which interior handleset trim can I order in either hand, and which ones are hand specific?
The Kwikset 968BL Balboa interior pack is offered in both right hand and left hand and is described as fully reversible for either door swing. Among the comparables, the Weslock 7900 Carlow interior single cylinder handleset trim is sold as a left hand item, so handing has to be confirmed before ordering that one.
12) Is the Balboa 968BL suitable for a commercial corridor or office door?
No. It is residential hardware in a traditional style, meant for entry doors on homes and multi-family units. A commercial opening needs a Grade 1 or Grade 2 commercial lockset, not a residential handleset interior pack with a dummy lever.
