Leviton SmartlockPro® Tamper-Resistant AFCI Receptacle, 20-Amp 125-Volt NEMA 5-20R White

The Leviton SmartlockPro® Tamper-Resistant Outlet Branch Circuit AFCI Receptacle is a residential-grade Decora®-style device engineered to detect and interrupt dangerous arc-fault conditions on branch circuit wiring. Rated 20-Amp at 125-Volt with a NEMA 5-20R configuration, it accepts standard 20A grounding plugs while its tamper-resistant shutters help block foreign-object insertion into the contacts. Finished in white, it combines code-driven arc-fault protection with the clean, low-profile face of the Decora® line, making it a practical upgrade for any branch circuit requiring AFCI protection.

Key Features

Leviton AFTR2-W – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Leviton AFTR2 AFCI receptacle protect the whole branch circuit or just the outlet itself?
The AFTR2 is an outlet branch circuit AFCI. It monitors the branch circuit wiring and cuts power when it detects a dangerous arc-fault condition, so protection extends to the wiring it is fed from as well as what is plugged in. It is installed at a 20-amp, 125-volt receptacle location rather than in the panel, which is how electricians add arc-fault protection to an existing circuit without swapping the breaker.
2) Can I put the Leviton AFTR2 20A AFCI receptacle on a 15-amp circuit?
No. The AFTR2 is a 20-amp device with a NEMA 5-20R face, which takes the T-slot 20A grounding plug as well as standard 15A plugs. Putting a 5-20R receptacle on a 15-amp branch circuit is not permitted, so a 15-amp circuit needs a 15-amp AFCI device instead. Confirm the breaker and conductor size before you order.
3) Does this Leviton AFCI receptacle also satisfy the tamper-resistant requirement for dwelling units?
It does. The AFTR2 is built with internal shutters that block foreign objects from being pushed into the contacts, so one device covers both the arc-fault and tamper-resistant requirements in a dwelling unit outlet. No separate TR receptacle is needed downstream of it at that location.
4) Can I replace a regular outlet with a Leviton AFCI receptacle to bring an older bedroom circuit up to code?
That is one of the main uses for it. Swapping a standard 20-amp receptacle for the AFTR2 adds arc-fault protection at that outlet without opening the panel or replacing the breaker, which is why it shows up on renovation and retrofit work as well as new construction. It has to be installed at the first outlet on the circuit to protect the wiring downstream, and the line and load terminals must be wired correctly for that to work.
5) What is the difference between an AFCI receptacle like this and a GFCI receptacle?
Different hazards. The AFTR2 detects arcing in the branch circuit wiring, the kind of fault that starts fires from loose terminations or damaged cable, and it interrupts power. A GFCI watches for current leaking to ground and protects people from shock. They are not interchangeable: a kitchen or laundry location that requires both needs either a dual-function device or a GFCI paired with this one. This device is AFCI only.
6) Is the Leviton AFTR2 rated for commercial or only residential use?
Residential grade. It is built for dwelling unit branch circuits, and that is the grade a property manager or contractor should hold it to. For high-traffic commercial openings, a break room, corridor, or tenant space in an office building, a commercial or spec-grade device is the right call. Light residential-type circuits in multi-family are exactly where this one belongs.
7) Will a standard duplex wallplate fit the Leviton AFTR2?
No. It has a Decora style face, so it needs a Decora or rocker-opening wallplate, not the two-hole duplex plate used on standard receptacles. Plan on ordering plates in white or ivory to match whichever version you specify.
