Juno Lighting TC44R – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Juno TC44R recessed housing be installed in an existing ceiling without tearing out drywall?
Yes, that's what the TC44R is built for. It's a remodel housing, engineered for retrofit installations in existing ceilings without major structural modifications, so it goes in through the cut aperture from below rather than being nailed to joists before the ceiling closes up. The pre-wired junction box means the electrical connections are factory-prepared, which matters when you're working overhead in a finished room. New-construction housings need joist access; this one does not.
2) What size hole do I cut for a Juno TC44R, and how much space do I need above the ceiling?
The TC44R is a 4-inch aperture housing, so the opening in the ceiling is sized to that 4-inch aperture. Above the ceiling, the housing body measures 14 x 8 x 8 inches, so plan your plenum clearance and joist spacing against those three numbers before you cut. In a 16-inch on-center bay the 8-inch dimension clears; the 14-inch run is the one to check against blocking, ducts, and pipe.
3) What lamp goes in a Juno TC44R low voltage housing?
One 12V 50W MR16 lamp. It's a single-lamp housing, so one MR16 per can, and 50W is the ceiling on wattage. The housing runs off 120V line voltage and steps it down internally, so you wire it like any other recessed can and put the MR16 in the trim.
4) Will a standard dimmer work on the Juno TC44R, or do I need a special one?
Not a standard incandescent dimmer. The TC44R uses a magnetic transformer, so it has to be paired with a dimmer specifically designed for low voltage magnetic transformers. An electronic low voltage (ELV) dimmer or a plain line-voltage dimmer is the wrong match and will give you flicker, buzz, or a dead transformer. Specify MLV dimming on the order and tell the electrician before they pick the wall control.
5) Can this Juno 4-inch housing go in a bathroom or over a shower?
It's Listed for damp locations, so a bathroom ceiling, a covered porch, or a laundry room is within its rating. Damp location is not the same as wet location: directly in a shower or tub enclosure, or anywhere it takes direct water spray, calls for a wet-location-listed housing instead. The housing is both UL Listed and CSA certified, so it's good for US and Canadian jobs.
6) Does the Juno TC44R come with a trim, or do I order that separately?
The TC44R is the housing only, the can, the pre-wired junction box, and the transformer. The trim, the visible ring or baffle in the ceiling, is a separate order, and so is the MR16 lamp. When you pick trim, match it to a 4-inch aperture low voltage MR16 housing, and decide the look then: baffle, reflector, gimbal, or wall wash. Budget one trim and one lamp per housing.
7) Can I put insulation up against the Juno TC44R housing?
No. The TC44R is a non-IC housing, which is what the TC prefix in Juno's numbering denotes, so batt or blown insulation has to be held back off the can. If you are working an insulated ceiling or an attic floor above, either dam the insulation clear of the housing or specify an IC-rated remodel housing instead. The double wall construction handles the housing's own thermal load, but it does not make the can insulation-contact rated.
8) Should I use a low voltage MR16 housing like this or a line voltage recessed can?
Pick low voltage MR16 when you want tight beam control, accent lighting, art washing, or task pools where the edge of the beam matters. MR16 optics do that better than a general-service line voltage lamp. The tradeoff on the TC44R is the transformer: it needs a magnetic low voltage dimmer rather than a standard one, and it's capped at 50W with one lamp. For plain ambient ceiling fill in a bedroom or hallway, a line voltage can is simpler to dim and stock. For kitchens, baths, and accent runs where you are aiming light at something specific, the low voltage housing is the right call.
9) I need to match recessed cans already in the building, what do I order to get the same fixture?
Order by the model number: Juno Lighting TC44R. That is the 4-inch low voltage remodel housing with the 50W MR16 lamp and magnetic transformer. If the existing cans in the other rooms carry that number on the label inside the can or on the junction box, you're buying the same housing and your trims will interchange. If the existing cans read a different aperture, a 5-inch or 6-inch, the trims will not swap and you need the housing that matches that aperture.
10) Is the transformer built into this Juno remodel housing or is it a remote unit I have to mount?
It's integral. The TC44R takes 120V at the pre-wired junction box and steps it down to 12V for the MR16 inside the housing, so there is no separate transformer to find a home for above the ceiling and no secondary low voltage run to pull. That's part of why the 14 x 8 x 8 inch body is the size it is. Plan a 120V branch circuit to each can, same as a line voltage fixture.
11) How many Juno TC44R cans can I put on one 15 amp circuit?
Each TC44R carries a single 50W MR16, so the lamp load is 50 watts per can plus transformer losses. On a 120V circuit that's under half an amp per fixture at the lamp. Size the run on actual connected load and your local derating rule rather than on a rule of thumb, and remember the magnetic transformer is an inductive load, so the dimmer's rating, not the breaker, is usually what limits how many cans go on one control.
