WAC Lighting HR-8401E – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the WAC HR-8401E 4 inch housing be installed in a ceiling with insulation touching it?
No. The HR-8401E is a Non-IC housing, so it has to be kept clear of insulation. If the ceiling cavity is insulated and you cannot maintain clearance, you need an IC-rated housing instead.
2) Will a 4 inch remodel housing fit in a 2x6 joist bay?
Yes, the WAC HR-8401E is built for 2 inch by 6 inch joist installations and shallow ceiling cavities, which is why it comes up on retrofit jobs where a standard-depth can will not clear.
3) Do I need a separate low voltage transformer for the WAC HR-8401E?
No separate transformer to buy. The HR-8401E has an integral electronic transformer included, wired for 120 VAC 50/60Hz input and rated 50W on the lamp side.
4) What dimmer works with the WAC HR-8401E low voltage housing?
Use an ELV (electronic low voltage) dimmer. The housing dims 100 percent down to 10 percent on ELV control because of its electronic transformer. A magnetic low voltage dimmer is the wrong control type for it.
5) Is this a new construction can or a remodel can?
Remodel. The HR-8401E installs from below into an existing finished ceiling, so you are cutting the opening and clipping the housing in rather than mounting to joists ahead of drywall.
6) Can I get to the junction box after the ceiling is closed up?
Yes. Both the J-box and the transformer on the HR-8401E are accessible through the ceiling opening, so service or a transformer swap does not mean opening drywall. That matters for property managers and MRO crews maintaining a lot of cans.
7) What protects the WAC HR-8401E if someone installs too large a lamp?
A supplied thermal protector guards against over-lamping, and the electronics carry auto-reset, soft start and short circuit protection. Still, the housing is rated 50W, so do not exceed that on the lamp.
8) Does the HR-8401E come with a trim?
No. The HR-8401E is the housing only, sold as a lighting accessory under part number HR-8401E. You order the 4 inch trim and the low voltage lamp separately to finish the opening.
9) What is the WAC HR-8401E housing made of?
20 gauge galvanized steel. That is the body of the can itself; trim is ordered separately for a 4 inch aperture.
