WAC Lighting HR-802 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the WAC HR-802 2.5 inch housing be installed in direct contact with insulation?
No. The HR-802 is a Non-IC housing, so it has to be kept clear of insulation. WAC calls for 3 inches of clearance on all sides where insulation is present. If your ceiling cavity is blown-in or batted right up to the opening, you need an IC-rated housing instead, or the insulation has to be dammed back around the can.
2) How much ceiling depth do I need for the WAC HR-802 recessed housing?
Total depth is 4 inches, which is why it gets specified for shallow plenums, soffits, and tight joist bays where a standard can will not fit. WAC describes it as one of the lowest profile recessed units available. Remember the Non-IC clearance still applies around it.
3) Do I need a separate transformer for the WAC HR-802 low voltage housing?
No, the transformer ships inside the housing. The HR-802 wires to 120 VAC, 50/60Hz line power and handles the step-down to low voltage itself, rated to 50W. You supply the branch circuit and the trim/lamp; no remote magnetic or electronic transformer has to be bought separately.
4) Is the HR-802 a new construction or remodel housing?
New construction. It mounts to the framing before the ceiling goes up, so it is the one to order while joists are still exposed. For a finished ceiling you would be looking for a remodel/retrofit housing in the same 2.5 inch aperture family, not this part.
5) Is the WAC HR-802 housing dimmable, and what kind of dimmer does it take?
It is dimmable on an ELV (electronic low voltage) dimmer, with a range of 100 percent down to 10 percent. A standard incandescent/MLV wall dimmer is not the right control here. Specify ELV dimmers for the circuit when you are laying out the job.
6) Is the trim included with the WAC HR-802, or do I order it separately?
The HR-802 is the housing only, with the transformer built in. The trim and the lamp are separate line items, so pair it with a 2.5 inch aperture WAC low voltage trim to complete the fixture.
7) What is the WAC HR-802 housing made of?
20 gauge steel. That is the standard body material for a commercial recessed can and it holds alignment during drywall work and ceiling finishing.
8) How many fixtures can I put on one circuit with the 50W HR-802 housings?
Each HR-802 is rated at 50W maximum on a 120 VAC input, so calculate your circuit load at 50W per housing plus whatever else is on the run. Six housings is 300W. Keep total connected load inside the breaker rating you are feeding from.
