WAC Lighting HR-801 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the WAC Lighting HR-801 housing be installed in a ceiling that already has insulation?
Only with clearance. The HR-801 is a Non-IC housing, so insulation cannot contact it. WAC calls for 3 inches of clearance on all sides where insulation is present. If you can't keep the batts or blown-in pulled back that far, you need an IC-rated housing instead.
2) Do I need to get above the ceiling to install the HR-801 remodel housing?
No. The HR-801 is a remodel housing, so it goes in through the ceiling cutout from below, and both the J-box and the transformer stay accessible through that opening. That's the reason to pick it over a new-construction housing on a finished ceiling where there's no attic access.
3) Does the WAC HR-801 low voltage housing need a separate transformer?
No separate transformer to buy or mount. The HR-801 ships with an integral electronic transformer, and it includes auto-reset, soft start and short circuit protection. You wire line voltage to it, 120 VAC 50/60Hz, and the housing handles the step-down.
4) Will the HR-801 housing dim, and what kind of dimmer does it take?
It dims on an ELV (electronic low voltage) dimmer, down to 10 percent of full output. A standard incandescent/forward-phase wall dimmer is not the right control here; specify an ELV dimmer or the lamp will flicker or drop out at the bottom of the range.
5) How many WAC HR-801 housings can I run on one circuit run?
The HR-801 is suitable for chain wiring, so you can daisy-chain housings from one to the next rather than home-running each can. Each housing draws up to 50W at 120 VAC, so size the circuit and dimmer against the total connected load of the run.
6) Does the HR-801 come with a trim and a lamp?
No. The HR-801 is the housing and transformer only, ordered as the 2.5 inch low voltage remodel non-IC housing. You order the matching 2.5 inch trim and the low voltage lamp separately to complete the fixture.
7) Is the WAC HR-801 housing steel or plastic?
The housing is built from 20 gauge steel, which is what lets it carry the integral transformer and hold shape in a retrofit cutout.
