1) Can the WAC Lighting R4FR 4" housing be installed in direct contact with ceiling insulation?
No. The R4FR is a Non-IC housing, so it has to be kept clear of insulation. If the ceiling cavity is insulated and you cannot maintain clearance around the can, you need an IC-rated housing instead. It is also rated for Dry locations only, so no showers, soffits or other damp/wet spots.
2) Will the WAC FQ 4" remodel housing work on 277V commercial lighting circuits?
Yes. The FQ 4" remodel housing is rated 120-240-277 volts, so the same part number works on 120V residential branch circuits and on 277V commercial feeds. It is hardwired, not plug-in, so it needs a permanent connection in a junction box.
3) Do I have to re-cut the ceiling if I switch from a round trim to a square or trimless trim on the FQ series?
No. The FQ 4" housings use one uniform ceiling cutout across the line, so Downlight, Adjustable and Wall Wash trims in round or square, trimmed or trimless, all drop into the same hole. That is useful on a remodel where you are standardizing openings but mixing trim looks room to room.
4) Is this a new-construction can or a remodel housing for an existing finished ceiling?
It's a remodel housing. The R4FR goes in through the ceiling cutout from below on a finished ceiling, so you don't need access above or bar hangers off the joists. For a ceiling that is still open framing, a new-construction FQ housing is the better choice.
5) What wattages and trim styles can I order in the WAC FQ 4" remodel housing?
Four output levels are offered, 13W, 19W, 25W and 28W. Trimmed is the R4FBRT model and trimless comes as R4FRRL (round) or R4FSRL (square). Note the 13W is the only trimmed unit offered at the 5.5 length, the other trimmed wattages come at 17.375, while all four trimless wattages are 5.5.
6) Do I need to buy a separate driver or lamp for the WAC R4FR housing?
The driver is included and concealed inside the housing, with quick connectors on it so it can be swapped later without rewiring the fixture. No bulb is included or needed as a separate lamp purchase; you do need to order the FQ trim separately, since the housing and trim are not one piece.
7) Is the WAC FQ 4" remodel housing listed for commercial inspection?
It carries ETL and cETL listings, so it is accepted in both US and Canadian jurisdictions, for Dry locations. Those are the only listings it holds, and it is not Energy Star qualified, which matters if a rebate program requires that.
