Metallics MPD1 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size hole does the Metallics MPD1 masonry bit drill, and what shank does it need?
The MPD1 drills a 1/8 inch diameter hole and has a 3/32 inch shank. The reduced shank means it chucks into a standard round-shank drill chuck rather than requiring an SDS rotary hammer, so it runs in a normal corded or cordless drill on hammer or rotary setting.
2) Will the Metallics MPD1 work in an SDS-Plus rotary hammer?
No. The MPD1 has a 3/32 inch straight shank, which has no SDS-Plus grooves and will not lock into an SDS chuck. Use it in a keyed or keyless three-jaw chuck. For an SDS-Plus hammer you need a bit with the SDS-Plus shank profile.
3) Can I use the Metallics MPD1 carbide bit on concrete, block and tile, or is it masonry only?
It is a carbide-tipped multipurpose bit, so the tip is ground to cut masonry materials such as concrete, brick and block as well as other substrates an electrician runs into on the same wall. Carbide is what lets it survive aggregate; a plain HSS twist bit at 1/8 inch would burn off on the first block.
4) What anchors does a 1/8 inch masonry bit like the Metallics MPD1 go with?
A 1/8 inch hole is the small end of the range, suited to light-duty fastening into masonry: small plastic or nylon wall plugs and the pilot holes for light hardware and conduit clips. For wedge anchors or sleeve anchors holding structural or heavier equipment loads you need a larger bit sized to that anchor's published hole diameter, not this one.
5) Is the Metallics MPD1 a single bit or a multi-pack?
One bit per pouch. The MPD1 ships as a single piece in a pouch, so if you are drilling a run of anchor holes and want spares on the truck, order the quantity you need rather than expecting a set.
