Master Lock 1KALF – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I order a group of Master Lock 40 Series padlocks all on one key?
Yes. The Master Lock 40 Series laminated steel padlock is sold two ways: KA (keyed alike, so one key opens every lock in the group) or KD (keyed different, each lock on its own key). Keyed alike is what property managers and MRO buyers use to put every storage cage, gate, or equipment box on one key. You can also specify a key code so a later reorder matches locks you already have in service, and there is a field to note whether a substitute keyed alike number is acceptable if your code isn't available.
2) Will a 1-1/2 inch shackle padlock fit through my hasp or chain?
The shackle gives 1-1/2 inch of clearance in height with a 3/4 inch inside width between the legs, on a 3/8 inch diameter hardened steel shackle. That's a short-shackle lock: fine for a standard hasp, a locker, a cabinet, or a slotted hasp staple, but it will not pass through thick chain links, a heavy gate latch, or a stacked pair of hasp plates. For those, step up to a long shackle version.
3) Can this Master Lock padlock be rekeyed later?
No. The 40 Series uses a non-rekeyable 4-pin W1 cylinder. If you lose control of a key, the lock gets replaced rather than re-pinned, so plan your key groups accordingly: order keyed different where each opening needs its own key, and keyed alike only across doors you're willing to re-lock as a set. It also won't accept an interchangeable core or a house keyway, so it can't be folded into an existing master key system.
4) Can I add more Master Lock 40 Series padlocks later and have them match the ones I already installed?
Yes, as long as you know the key code. Reorder the KA (keyed alike) option and enter the code stamped on your existing keys; the new locks will operate on the same key. Because the cylinder is non-rekeyable, matching by key code at the time of order is the only way to add to an existing group. If your code isn't available when you order, you can note that a substitute keyed alike number is acceptable, but be aware those locks will then be a separate group from the originals.
5) What key codes can I specify on this Master Lock 40 Series keyed alike padlock?
The 40 Series padlock can be ordered against these key codes: 2002, 2018, 2126, 2151, 2289, 2326, 2359, 2402, 2438, 2440, 2451, 2507, 2616, 2655, 2703, 2849, 2991 and 7065. If you already run a keyed alike group in your building, give the code stamped on your existing keys and the new locks will match it. There is also a free text field to enter a code and to say whether you'll accept an alternate keyed alike number.
6) Is this padlock tough enough for an outdoor gate or a jobsite?
It's built with a 1-3/4 inch wide laminated steel body, a hardened steel shackle, and dual ball bearing locking that resists prying on both shackle legs, with drill and pry protection called out by the maker. That's a solid general purpose lock for sheds, gates, tool cribs and lockers. Master Lock classes it as residential grade rather than commercial, so for high-security or high-abuse exterior points a heavier shrouded or boron shackle lock is the better call.
7) How wide is the Master Lock 40 Series padlock body?
The lock body measures 1-3/4 inches (44mm) across, which is the dimension that decides whether it seats inside a recessed hasp cup or a lock guard. Check the opening on your hasp before ordering if it's a shrouded or cup style.
