Master Lock 1KALN – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between the KA and KD keying options on the Master Lock 40 Series padlock?
Two keying choices are offered. KD (keyed different) gives each padlock its own unique key, which is what you want when separate tenants or crews each control their own lock. KA (keyed alike) means every padlock in the order opens with the same key, so one key covers a run of gates, lockers or cabinets. If you go keyed alike you can pick from key codes 2023, 2126, 2001, 2703 or 2438, or type in a specific key number you already have in the field for it.
2) Can I add this padlock to an existing keyed alike set I already bought?
Yes, if you know the key code stamped on the keys you already carry. Order the keyed alike version and enter that number in the key code field; there is also the option to allow a substitute keyed alike number if your code cannot be supplied. Selecting keyed different instead will give you a lock that does not match your existing key.
3) Can this Master Lock padlock be rekeyed to match my building master key system?
No. The 40 Series laminated padlock uses a non-rekeyable 4-pin W1 cylinder, so it cannot be repinned into a master key system or changed to a different key later. If a lock has to work off an existing keyway or master system, you need a padlock that accepts an interchangeable core or a rekeyable cylinder instead. For matching multiple padlocks here, the keyed alike option is the route.
4) Will this padlock go through the staple on a standard hasp?
The shackle clears 3/4 inch between the legs, so it passes through any staple, chain link or hasp eye narrower than that. Measure the opening on your hasp before ordering, since a heavy weld-on staple can easily exceed 3/4 inch and will need a padlock with a wider shackle spread.
5) Is a laminated steel padlock strong enough for an exterior gate or is it only for indoor use?
The body is built up from laminated steel plates, which is the construction Master Lock uses to resist drilling and prying, and the shackle is hardened steel for cut resistance. Dual ball bearing locking holds the shackle on both legs, so it does not pop open under a pry bar the way a single-latch lock can. It is catalogued as a residential-duty lock, so for a high-risk exterior opening or a site that gets attacked with tools, step up to a shrouded or solid body padlock.
6) Why choose a long shackle padlock over a short shackle one?
A long shackle buys you vertical reach, which is what you need on chain link gates, chain and cable runs, and hasps that sit proud of the door. The trade off is exposure: more shackle showing means more room for bolt cutters or a pry bar. For a flush hasp on a shed or cabinet, a short shackle version of the same 40 Series lock is the tighter, harder to attack choice.
7) Can I standardize a whole property on this one padlock?
That is what the keyed alike option is for. Order the run keyed alike on a single code and one key opens every lock on the site, which is how property managers keep gates, meter rooms and storage cages on one key instead of a ring of thirty. Keep a note of the code you were supplied so later additions match. Bear in mind the cylinders are non-rekeyable, so any future change of key means replacing the locks rather than repinning them.
8) Does a 4-pin cylinder give enough pick resistance for a padlock on a tenant storage unit?
The pin tumbler cylinder here is a 4-pin W1 design, which Master Lock states helps prevent picking and is the normal level for general property and storage use. It is not a high security cylinder, so if a locksmith or integrator is specifying against a pick and bump resistant requirement, look at a padlock with a higher pin count or a restricted high security keyway.
