Medeco 33700006K-26-8ED – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Medeco X4 SFIC core fit my existing Schlage small format interchangeable core locks?
Yes. The Medeco X4SFIC is built to the industry-standard SFIC housing envelope and is listed as compatible with existing SFIC hardware from other manufacturers, Schlage included. That means the core drops into the same lever, knob, mortise housing, padlock or exit device trim you already have, pulled with a control key, so you upgrade key control without buying new lock bodies. It is a core swap, not a hardware replacement.
2) Should I order the 6-pin or 7-pin Medeco X4 SFIC core?
Both pin counts are offered on the X4SFIC, and the choice comes down to the keying system you are joining. If the facility already runs a KeyMark X4 system, match the pin count already in service so the existing keys and masters work. Starting fresh, a 7-pin core gives you more chambers to build a deeper master key hierarchy across a large property; a 6-pin core is the simpler pick for a single building or a small keyed-alike group. Every finish offered is available in both 6 and 7 pins.
3) Can our maintenance staff re-key a Medeco X4 SFIC core themselves without a locksmith?
Changing the core, yes. With a control key, staff pull the X4 core out of the housing and drop a new one in with no disassembly of the lock, so a turnover, a lost key or a terminated employee is handled in seconds by someone who is not a locksmith. What that does not mean is repinning the core itself, or cutting keys: the X4 key blank carries utility patent protection, so blanks and duplicates stay restricted to authorized personnel. Practically, you keep a small stock of pre-keyed cores on hand and rotate them.
4) What makes Medeco KeyMark X4 different from a standard SFIC core we could buy cheaper?
Key control is the difference. A standard SFIC core takes a commodity blank anyone can cut, so a tenant or a subcontractor can walk into a hardware store and duplicate the key. The X4 blank is utility patented, with duplication protection running through 2030, so blanks are restricted to authorized personnel or the institution holding the system. The core itself is also built for attack resistance: spool-shaped top and bottom pins to defeat picking, nickel silver bottom pins for wear, and individual pin chamber caps that make servicing straightforward. If your problem is unauthorized keys rather than worn locks, that is what you are paying for.
5) Will a Medeco X4 SFIC core work with keys from another Medeco or KeyMark system we already have?
Only if that system is on the same keyway. This core is cut for the 8E keyway in the Medeco KeyMark X4 family, and SFIC keyways do not cross over, so an existing Medeco system on a different keyway will not operate it and cannot be master keyed with it. Before ordering for an expansion, check the keyway stamped on your current key or on the system paperwork. If it is not 8E, you are starting a separate system rather than extending the one you have.
6) Can I put an X4 SFIC core in a lock that takes a large format interchangeable core or a standard mortise cylinder?
No. This is a small format core, the figure-eight body, and it only fits housings prepped for SFIC. A large format interchangeable core is a different, larger shape and will not accept it, and a lock built for a conventional mortise or rim cylinder has no core cavity or control key function at all. To move those openings onto an X4 system you need SFIC-prepped housings or SFIC retrofit cylinders for the lock bodies you have, not just the core.
7) We have mixed Schlage and other brand SFIC locks across a property. Can we standardize the whole facility on one Medeco X4 key system?
That is the usual reason to buy these. Because the X4 core is dimensionally an industry-standard SFIC and works in existing SFIC hardware from other manufacturers including Schlage, you can pull the assorted cores across levers, deadbolts, exit device trim and padlock housings and replace them all with 8E keyway X4 cores on a single master keyed hierarchy. Every opening that already has an SFIC housing converts with a core swap. Openings without SFIC prep are the ones needing hardware work, so survey the building for those before you place the order.
8) Can I get Medeco X4 SFIC cores keyed alike across a group of doors, or master keyed for a building?
All three keying arrangements are available on the X4SFIC: keyed alike so one key runs a group of doors, keyed different so each opening has its own key, and master keyed so a building master or grand master sits above individual change keys. For a multi-building or multi-tenant property, specify the pin count, the keying arrangement and where each core sits in the hierarchy when you order, and keep the control key separate from the operating keys.
9) Do I need a control key to install a Medeco X4 SFIC core, and is it included?
A control key is required. It is what retracts the figure-eight core's retaining lug so the core comes out of the housing, and without one you cannot install or remove the core at all. Control keys are part of the keying system, ordered with it, and are not supplied with each individual core. If you are starting a new X4 system, specify the control key on the order; if you are adding cores to a system already in place, the control key you have for that system pulls them.
10) What finishes do Medeco X4 SFIC cores come in, and does the core finish have to match my lever?
Fourteen finishes are offered: 605 Bright Brass, 606 Satin Brass, 609 Antique Brass, 610 Satin Brass Blackened, 611 Bright Bronze, 612 Satin Bronze, 613 Dark Bronze Oil-Rubbed, 618 Bright Nickel, 619 Satin Nickel, 620 Antique Nickel, 622 Flat Black, 624 Dark Bronze, 625 Bright Chrome and 626 Satin Chrome. Only the core face shows once it is installed, so matching it to the surrounding trim matters on visible openings, front entries, tenant doors, anything a customer looks at. On back of house, mechanical rooms and stairwells, buyers commonly standardize on one finish across the whole property to keep stock simple.
11) Is the Medeco X4 SFIC core solid brass, and will it hold up in a high-traffic commercial door?
The core body is solid brass, with nickel silver bottom pins for wear resistance. Nickel silver is harder than the brass pins used in commodity cores, which is what keeps the shear line accurate after tens of thousands of key insertions. That combination is why these get specified for commercial duty: quick-service restaurants, retail, apartment buildings, hospitals, schools and office properties, where the same door gets keyed several times a day.

Excellent cores. Key turns in them very very smoothly. I like that the pins are made of hardened metal, increasing the lifespan of each key core. Very nice design and high quality product ZenSupply stayed in touch with me the whole time and ensured I get these locks as soon as possible. Thank you! Exce
