Medeco® X4 Small Format Interchangeable Cores (SFIC) provide utility patented key control for applications that don't require a UL listed cylinder. Designed to allow the user to instantaneously remove and replace cores through the use of a control key, Medeco® X4 cores provide the ultimate in convenience.

1) Will a Medeco X4 KeyMark SFIC core drop into my existing Best-style small format interchangeable core housings?
The Medeco X4 KeyMark core is a small format interchangeable core, so it goes into standard SFIC housings and is pulled and swapped with a control key, no disassembly of the lock. Medeco states outright that the X4 line provides a key control retrofit for other manufacturers' SFIC products already in service. That is the usual reason a facility buys these: keep the hardware, change the key system to a patented one.
2) Does the Medeco X4 KeyMark SFIC work in Schlage hardware?
Schlage compatibility is listed for the X4 KeyMark core, so it is intended for Schlage SFIC-prepped hardware. The core itself is the figure-eight small format interchangeable core, not a mortise or rim cylinder, so the lock body has to be SFIC prepped to take it.
3) Should I order the 6-pin or 7-pin Medeco X4 KeyMark core?
Both are offered. Match the pin count to the master key system you are already running: a 7-pin core gives an extra chamber for deeper masterkeying levels, a 6-pin matches most existing 6-pin SFIC systems. Mixing pin counts inside one system is where facilities get into trouble, so follow whatever the existing keying schedule uses. Every combination on the X4 KeyMark 6G core is 6 or 7 pin.
4) What is the difference between ordering the Medeco X4 core pinned versus sub-assembled?
Pinned means the core arrives combinated to a keying schedule and is ready to install. Sub-assembled means it ships for a locksmith or in-house shop to pin to their own system, which is what you want if you hold a Medeco KeyMark system and combinate in house. Both are available in 6-pin and 7-pin, in satin brass and satin chrome.
5) Can maintenance staff rekey a Medeco X4 SFIC without a locksmith?
That is the whole point of an interchangeable core. With the control key, non-technical staff pull the core out of the lock housing and drop in a core with a new combination, and the opening is effectively rekeyed without taking the lock apart or calling a service tech. For a property manager turning over apartments or a fast food operator with staff churn, that is the difference between a service call and a two minute swap. You still need cores on hand, and the control key has to be secured.
6) Is a Medeco X4 KeyMark SFIC heavy enough for a high traffic commercial door?

Treat X4 as a key control product first and an attack resistant cylinder second. If the threat you are guarding against is physical attack rather than unauthorized duplication, specify a UL listed high security cylinder instead.
8) Can I keep the same key across an entire building with Medeco X4 KeyMark cores?
Yes. X4 cores can be keyed alike, keyed different, or master keyed, so a facility can run one grand master over a whole building and still give each tenant or department its own change key. All the cores here are the 6G keyway, so they belong to the same keyway family and can be combinated into one system. Cores from a different keyway will not operate on the same keys.
9) What finishes do Medeco X4 KeyMark SFIC cores come in, and which matches my existing hardware?
Two: 606 satin brass and 626 satin chrome. 626 is the standard commercial finish and is what most Grade 1 lever and cylindrical hardware is specified in, so it is the safe match on a typical office or school. Go 606 only where the surrounding trim is already brass. Both finishes are available in 6-pin and 7-pin, pinned or sub-assembled.
10) Are Medeco X4 cores serviceable if a pin chamber needs work later?
Individual pin chamber caps make servicing straightforward, so a shop can open a single chamber rather than tearing down the whole core. That matters if you buy sub-assembled and combinate in house, or if you re-pin cores as tenants turn over.
