1) Will a Medeco X4 KeyMark SFIC core drop into my existing Best-style small format interchangeable core housings?
The Medeco X4 KeyMark core is a small format interchangeable core, so it goes into the standard SFIC figure-eight housings and is pulled and replaced with a control key. 2) What is the difference between the 6-pin and 7-pin Medeco X4 SFIC cores, and which one do I order?
Both pin counts are offered on the X4 KeyMark core. The 6-pin build is the common small format configuration; the 7-pin adds a chamber, which gives a larger master keying capacity for a system that has to grow. The rule is match what your system already uses: a 6-pin system's keys will not operate a 7-pin core and mixing the two inside one master key system creates problems your locksmith has to unwind. If you are starting fresh and expect the facility to expand, order 7 pin.
3) What does Pinned vs Sub-Assembled mean when ordering a Medeco X4 SFIC core?
Pinned means the core arrives combinated to a key code and ready to install. Sub-Assembled means it ships without the final pinning so a locksmith or an in-house shop with the KeyMark pinning kit combinates it to your own system. Both are offered in 6 and 7 pin. Property managers and MRO buyers who do not keep a pinning bench should take the Pinned option; locksmiths and integrators running their own KeyMark systems usually want Sub-Assembled so the core enters their existing key records.
4) Can tenants or employees get keys copied at a hardware store if we use Medeco X4 KeyMark cores?
No. X4 KeyMark runs on a utility patented key control system with a restricted DHQ keyway, so blanks are not sold over the counter and duplication is controlled. That is the whole reason the line exists, and it is why it lands in apartments, office buildings, schools and hospitals along with high turnover retail and food service. When staff leave, you pull the core with the control key and drop in a new combination instead of replacing the lock.
5) Do I need a UL 437 listed cylinder, or is the Medeco X4 enough for my building?
X4 is built for applications that do not require a UL listed cylinder. It is a Grade 1, heavy duty commercial core with spool top and bottom pins for pick resistance and solid nickel silver bottom pins for wear, but it is not the line to specify when a drawing, an insurance requirement or a code official calls out a UL listed high security cylinder. If your spec has that callout, move up to a Medeco high security SFIC rather than X4. For key control on general office, school, multi-family and retail openings, X4 is the right tier.
6) Do all my Medeco X4 cores have to be on the same keyway to master key the building?
Yes, a master key system runs on one keyway family, and this core is cut for the DHQ keyway. If you are adding to an existing Medeco KeyMark system, the new cores have to match the keyway your system was built on or the keys will not enter. Order every core for the same system in DHQ, on the same pin count, and they can be keyed alike, keyed different, or master keyed as your key schedule requires.
7) Which finish of the Medeco X4 SFIC core should I order to match my existing hardware?
Three finishes are offered on the X4 KeyMark core, and all three are available in both 6 and 7 pin and in both Pinned and Sub-Assembled: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, and 626 satin chrome. 626 satin chrome is the one that matches the bulk of commercial lever and exit hardware in a typical office, school or multi-family building. Only the core face shows once it is seated in the housing, so match the finish to the lockset trim, not to the door.
8) Can maintenance staff rekey these Medeco cores themselves without a locksmith?
Rekeying is a core swap, not a lock teardown. A control key pulls the existing core out of the housing and a core with a new combination goes in, which non-technical staff can do at the door in seconds. That removes the service call for routine rekeys after a turnover or a lost key. What still needs a locksmith or a shop with KeyMark tooling is combinating the cores themselves, which is why Sub-Assembled cores exist alongside the Pinned ones.
