1) Do I need the 4-terminal or the 7-terminal version of the Milbank U357 meter socket?
That depends on what your utility meters. The U357-RL-200 comes two ways: U3574-RL-200 with 4 terminals and U3577-RL-200 with 7 terminals. Four-jaw sockets are the usual single-phase 120/240V residential and light commercial arrangement; seven-jaw sockets are used where the utility meters a three-phase or network service. The utility dictates the jaw configuration, so confirm the meter form with them before you pick the terminal count. Both versions carry the same 200 continuous ampere rating and a 240 volt AC maximum.
2) What size service conductors will fit the lay-in terminals on this 200A Milbank meter socket?
The load side lay-in terminals take 1 AWG through 300 kcmil. That covers the normal copper and aluminum runs for a 200 amp service, including 2/0 copper and 4/0 aluminum. Lay-in design means you drop the conductor into the terminal rather than fishing it through a hole, which saves time in a tight can. Equipment grounding is handled by two barrel ground lugs.
3) Can this meter socket be mounted outside on an exterior wall?
Yes. The enclosure is Type 3R, which is the rain, sleet and ice rating used for outdoor service equipment, and it is built from G90 galvanized steel with a powder coat finish. It surface mounts to the wall, so no flush pocket or recessed box is needed. The whole assembly is UL Listed.
4) Does this Milbank socket include the main breaker, or do I buy that separately?
The breaker is part of the unit. One 200 ampere main breaker is factory installed, giving you overcurrent protection and a service disconnect at the meter in a single enclosure. There is one breaker only and no branch circuit space, so panelboard distribution still happens downstream.
5) Is there a meter bypass on this socket for hot socket changes?
No bypass. The U357-RL-200 is a no-bypass socket, so the meter cannot be pulled and the load fed through a bypass lever while energized. If your utility requires a lever or horn bypass for meter maintenance, you need a bypass-equipped socket instead of this one.
6) Is this a ringless socket or does it take a sealing ring?
It is a ring type socket, meaning the cover is retained by a sealing ring the utility installs and seals. Many utilities specify one style exclusively, so if your utility standard calls for ringless covers this is the wrong configuration. Check the utility's approved meter socket list before ordering.
7) Will this work for a 120/208V or 277V service?
It is rated up to 240 volts AC at 60 hertz, so 120/240V single-phase and 120/208V fall inside the rating. Anything above 240 volts, including 277/480V services, is outside what this socket is rated for and needs different equipment.
8) How does the conduit enter the top of this Milbank meter socket?
The top comes with a small hub opening and closing plate, so you can either leave the plate in place for a side or bottom entry, or remove it and install the correct hub for your service raceway. The hub itself is a separate item sized to the conduit you are running.
9) Can I use one of these for a duplex or two-unit building?
Not for two metered tenants. This is a single position socket with one meter and one 200 amp main, so it serves one metered service. A duplex or multi-unit building with separately billed units needs a multi-position socket or a meter stack with one position per tenant. It does suit a single service in a residential, small commercial, or light industrial building.
