1) Can the Milbank U3802 AC disconnect be mounted outdoors next to the condenser?
Yes. The U3802 uses a Type 3R painted steel enclosure, which is the rainproof rating used for outdoor wall mounting beside a condensing unit. It is a surface mount box, so it fastens to the wall face rather than recessing into it, and conduit enters through knockouts you punch where you need them.
2) Is the Milbank U3802 a fused or non-fused disconnect?
Non-fused. The U3802 is a pull-out disconnect with no trip mechanism and no fuse block, so it isolates the unit but provides no overcurrent protection of its own. That protection has to come from the branch circuit breaker at the panel, sized per the condenser nameplate. If the equipment nameplate specifies maximum overcurrent protection by HACR fuses rather than a breaker, order a fused pull-out instead.
3) Can I use the Milbank U3802 on a 208V three phase rooftop unit?
No. The U3802 is a 2-pole device, so it switches two conductors only, and a three phase unit needs all three legs opened. It is rated up to 240 volts AC, which covers 208V, but the pole count is the limit here. For a three phase RTU you need a 3-pole disconnect sized to that unit's nameplate.
4) How much wall space do I need for a Milbank 60 amp AC disconnect?
The box measures 2.85 x 5 x 7.5 inches overall. That is a small footprint next to a condenser, but leave room below and to the side for the conduit whip and for the working clearance the electrical code requires in front of the disconnect. Because it is surface mounted, the 2.85 inch dimension is the depth it stands off the wall once the pull-out handle is in place.
5) What does the 10,000 AIC rating on an air conditioner disconnect actually mean for my install?
It is the fault current the U3802 can safely interrupt, 10,000 amperes. For a residential or light commercial service feeding a rooftop or pad-mounted condenser, available fault current at the disconnect is normally well under that figure, so the box is adequate. On a larger commercial service where the utility transformer is close and the calculated available fault current at that point exceeds 10kA, this disconnect is not the right choice and the series rating has to be checked against the upstream device.
6) Does a pull-out disconnect satisfy the code requirement for a service disconnect in sight of the AC unit?
A pull-out is the standard way this requirement gets met. The U3802 is UL Listed and its pull-out block physically separates the contacts and comes out in the technician's hand, so there is visible, verifiable isolation before anyone opens the condenser. Mount it within sight of and readily accessible to the equipment it serves, and the inspector gets what they are looking for. Local amendments still govern, so confirm placement with your AHJ.
7) What is the difference between a pull-out AC disconnect and a lever style safety switch?
A pull-out like the U3802 uses a removable block: the technician grips it, pulls it straight out, and carries it, which is the fastest way to guarantee nobody re-energizes the condenser while they are in it. A lever style safety switch stays assembled and throws a handle, which is what you want when the disconnect has to be padlockable for a lockout tagout program or when the same box needs to carry fuses. For a standard residential or light commercial condenser change-out, the pull-out is the usual choice. For an institutional facility with formal LOTO procedures, specify a lockable lever switch instead.
