The U4523-X-Z11-LI is a 3-phase, 600VAC, 60Hz single-position socket with a 13-terminal (13 jaw) configuration. Thirteen jaws is the count used for 3-phase 4-wire metering where the utility requires a separate neutral/current reference position, so it is not interchangeable with a 7-jaw or 8-jaw socket. 2) Is this Milbank socket accepted by LIPA/Long Island utility inspectors?
The U4523-X-Z11-LI is built to the Long Island Lighting Company specification, which is what the LI suffix and the Z11 configuration designate. If you are working in that territory and the utility spec sheet calls for an approved 400A 3-phase ringless can, this is the version built for it. Outside that territory a standard non-LI Milbank 400A socket is the usual order.
3) What size conductors can I land in this 400 amp meter socket?
Line and load lugs both take 4 AWG through 600 kcmil, or two conductors per phase from 1/0 AWG through 250 kcmil. They are single mechanical terminals, so parallel runs above 250 kcmil will not land here. At 400 continuous amps most installs come in on parallel 4/0 or 250 kcmil copper or a single 600 kcmil aluminum per phase.
4) Does this Milbank 400A socket have a main breaker or disconnect in it?
No. It is a meter socket only, with no main breaker and no bypass provision. Your service disconnect and overcurrent protection have to be in separate gear downstream. Because there is no bypass, the meter has to be pulled with the service dead or under utility supervision for any work on the socket.
5) Can this Milbank socket be fed from an underground lateral, or is it overhead only?
Either. Cable entry is rated for overhead or underground, and the can ships with a large hub closing plate so you can cut in the hub or fitting your service requires for an overhead drop, or leave the plate closed and bring conduit up through the bottom for an underground lateral. The hub itself is a separate order.
6) How much wall space do I need for the Milbank U4523 meter socket, and how does it mount?
Plan for a footprint of 10 inches deep by 21 inches wide by 42 inches high. It is surface mount, so it hangs on the wall or on unistrut rather than recessing into it. At 42 inches tall you also need to set it so the meter face lands in the utility's required height window.
